Interval training main

Interval training is very popular and proving to be helpful and beneficial for many. There are a lot of benefits to this type of training, one of them being that it can be adapted for any fitness level. Beginners to a new fitness regime can start out with any length of intervals and slowly build up their interval length and difficulty as their fitness level grows.

The colder and varied weather over the winter months often keeps us indoors.  You have maybe transitioned some of your workouts inside your home or garage. Interval training is flexible and can be done anywhere and there are some great variations for the treadmill or an exercise bike.

What is interval training?

treadmillInterval training is a form of exercise where you alternate short bursts of intense activity with longer intervals of less intense activity.

For example, if you often take walks, you will add in short bursts of jogging or sprinting, depending on your fitness level. You may walk for 2 minutes and then jog or sprint for 30 seconds. As your fitness level, endurance and stamina increases over time you can adjust the seconds or minutes of your intense and less intense intervals.

In-home fitness equipment helps with interval training

With the advances in technology, most treadmills and exercise bikes offer a variety of adjustable built-in training programs. These programs are perfect for beginners and once you get more familiar with your equipment you’ll get more comfortable with all the options. Some other great features are smart touch screen displays, online coaching and classes, a monthly streaming membership, built-in Wi-Fi or Bluetooth and apps to keep track and monitor your fitness level.

Interval training on a treadmill

Interval training touch screenI love the versatility of a treadmill. They can be used by everyone and for all fitness levels and you can walk, jog or sprint and with the incline option you can mimic hiking.

If you’re unsure of where to start on your fitness journey, you can try the quick start option and play around with the incline and resistance levels until you find the right fit for you. After doing this you may find a pre-set or built-in training program on the treadmill or through an app if your treadmill has this feature. I love that even when you choose a pre-set or built-in option, you can always adjust the incline and resistance manually right on your display.

Interval training on a bike

interval training smart featuresAnother great option for indoor interval training is an exercise bike. Bikes are a great option for anyone with mobility issues or knee or joint pain. An upright bike will provide a whole-body workout.

The upright style takes up little space if that’s a concern and with all the features and options you can customize a workout that fits your personal goals. The other option is a recumbent bike. These bikes have an oversized seat and backrest and are designed with comfort in mind while still providing a variety of ride options.

Overall, a treadmill or exercise bike is a great addition to your home gym. Their flexibility and versatility allow you to reap their benefits year-round and are the perfect motivator to keep you on track with your fitness goals.
