For the kids I like to incorporate frozen or fresh fruit, a few ice cubes, and a scoop of yogurt, but when I make one for myself, I like to add a handful of kale or spinach and a scoop of protein powder too.

But not all protein powders are created equal, and I’ll be the first to admit that after adding that scoop, I’ve looked longingly at my kid’s smoothie and wish I wasn’t so focused on getting those much-needed extra greens. That’s because the mix of some protein powder and greens might be great for you, but  they can add a really strong taste to the smoothie.

Thankfully, I discovered over the past few weeks that my quest for a healthy, delicious smoothie that’s also packed with nutrition was over. It tastes great and is so versatile you can literally add it to everything you make for that extra boost of nutrition.

What’s in Vega One All-In-One Nutritional Shake?

Before I get to what I made with my Vega One and how it all turned out, I’ll go over a few of the ingredients in one scoop. I have to admit, I was pretty surprised they can pack that much in.


Vega One includes a protein blend, and each scoop adds 20g of protein to whatever you add it to.

That handful of spinach you add to your smoothie has nothing on a scoop of Vega One. It has organic broccoli, kale, spirulina, and Vega Chlorella. That’s six servings of greens per serving.

The powder itself is yellow, but when you add add water to it, it’s really green.


Everyone needs calcium for stronger bones, and Vega One will give you 20% of your daily calcium needs by including organic marine algae.

Vitamins and Minerals

I know how hard it is to have a balanced diet, and during a busy day I’m much more likely to reach for something that’s quick and satisfying but not packed with nutrition. When it comes to using Vega One, I found that the best rule of thumb is to add a little of it to a dish every day.

I had two containers of Vega One: the natural flavour and the berry flavour. I wasn’t quite sure what to add the natural flavour too, but the berry flavour inspired me to whip up a quick smoothie so I could compare the taste to other powders I’ve tried.

I added strawberries, almond milk, and a half scoop of Vega One. The berry flavour wasn’t really noticeable, so if you’re not a fan of powders just because of the extra taste, you’ll like this shake. It was very light and slightly sweet.

vega-one-smoothiesNext I took a look on the Vega One website and choose a recipe from the wide variety of different recipes they offer. We’re huge fans of waffles over here, so I decided to add Vega One to a batch of waffles.

I go through the steps to making the waffles in my video, but I’m happy to say they were a huge hit. I used the Vega One All-In-One Nutritional Natural Shake and there was no additional taste at all. My kids gobbled the waffles up so fast I didn’t even have time to really take a photo, so cooking with Vega One is a great way to add in a boost of amazing nutrition for everyone in your family.

Here’s the recipe I used from Vega One.

2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
2 cups unsweetened Silk Almond milk
1 Tbsp ground flax seed
3 Tbsp water
2 cups all-purpose gluten-free flour (I used Bob’s Red Mill)
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 cup Vanilla Vega® Essentials
or 1/2 cup French Vanilla Vega One™ Nutritional Shake
1 cup dried or frozen blueberries
1/2 banana, mashed
1-2 Tbsp coconut oil, liquid
1 Tbsp sugar (omit if making pancakes)
Optional toppings: maple syrup, blueberries, and chopped walnuts


Combine apple cider vinegar and almond milk, set aside (to make buttermilk).

Make a flaxseed “egg” by combining flaxseed and water. Stir and set aside.

Combine flour, baking powder and Vega Essentials or Vega One. If making waffles, add sugar now.

In a separate bowl, combine banana, flaxseed egg, buttermilk mixture, and coconut oil (1 tablespoon for pancakes, 2 tablespoon for waffles).

Mix wet into dry ingredients, until mostly combined, then fold in blueberries (if the batter appears too thick, add more almond milk 1 tablespoon at a time. if it’s too thin add 1 tablespoon of flour at a time).

Preheat waffle iron.

Lightly grease waffle iron with coconut oil.

Cook waffles as per waffle iron directions (will vary depending on waffle iron).

For pancakes:

Heat pan on med heat.

Lightly grease pan with coconut oil.

Once hot, drop pancake batter onto pan.

Flip once batter is bubbly in the center, 3 minutes.

Cook until golden brown, approximately 3 minutes.

I didn’t try the other protein powders from Vega One, but I was pretty happy with how versatile the Vega One Nutritional Shake was. It’s the perfect addition to boost any meal, and whether you have an active lifestyle and are looking for a boost of energy and vitamins or you’re worried about getting your proper nutrition every day, Vega One is the best choice I’ve come cross for both. It tastes great and can be added to anything.
