Best Buy will be hosting its largest in-person learning event at Robson Square Ice Rink, featuring hands-on activities with the latest tech. What is Geek Squad Academy
For almost ten years, Best Buy Canada has been proud to offer Geek Squad Academy to students aged 10 to 16. We partner with schools and not-for-profit organizations to show youth the wonders and opportunities that technology holds—both for their lives today and for their future careers. When attending Geek Squad Academy, students become “Junior Agents” and get fun, hands-on experience with some of the newest and coolest technology.
What is Youth Tech Day?
Youth Tech Day is Best Buy Canada’s biggest Geek Squad Academy event! Last year was the first ever Youth Tech Day event, held in Toronto. This year we’re bringing our fun-filled STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) event to downtown Vancouver, to the iconic Robson Square Ice Rink!
Youth Tech Day is an opportunity to get hands on with the latest and coolest tech. Youth can register for one of two three-hour Geek Squad Academy camps that are jam-packed with interactive workshops on topics like robotics, digital music, and coding. Each camp is run by Best Buy employees and Geek Squad Agents! Families can also drop in anytime throughout the day to check out awesome hands-on activities like interactive vendor displays, and booths featuring robotics, circuit building, digital music creation, and more. Expect awesome prize giveaways, a live DJ, and much more!
When and where is the event?
Saturday, September 7, 2024 at Robson Square Ice Rink in downtown Vancouver. The event, including all vendor displays and interactive booths, will be open to the public from 11am to 6pm.
There will also be two STEM camp sessions available for registration (100 spots for youth in each session):
- Session #1: 9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m
- Session #2: 1:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m
Pre-registration is required for each three-hour camp. No registration is required to explore the vendor displays, interactive booths, and to enter prize giveaways.
How to pre-register for Youth Tech Day
Registering your child for our free STEM camps is easy! Simply click the “Pre-register here” link in this article and complete the online form. You’ll receive confirmation if your registration is successful. Note: there are only 200 spots available, and we expect that this event will be very popular. Register early for the best chance!
Also, download the Permission and participant release form, print it and fill it in, and hand it in at the event when you arrive with your child.
Who can participate in this event?
- Each three-hour Geek Squad Academy camp is open to youth between the ages of 10 to 16 years old.
- Pre-registration is open, so be sure to sign up soon (spots are limited).
- If you are unable to secure one of the 200 spots, there will be plenty of drop-in activities between 11am to 6pm to explore.
How much does this event cost?
Youth Tech Day is free! Youth who would like to attend one of the three-hour Geek Squad Academy camps must pre-register, but all activities are free of charge. This includes all vendor product demos, interactive drop-in activities, and prize giveaways.
What kind of activities will be included
Pre-registered Geek Squad Academy campers will participate in three classes:
- Robotics: Learn the basics of coding, and program a robot to make a letter, shape, and drive through a maze.
- Digital music: Use a tablet to create your own music by learning to play and record a variety of digital instruments.
- Coding: Fix a broken video game so you can play it! Learn some coding skills and about video game design at the same time.
Not able to attend one of the pre-registered camps? There will be plenty of other activities onsite available to the public! Vendors such as Microsoft, Nintendo, Samsung, Skullcandy, Fujifilm Instax, LARQ, and Keurig will be on hand with interactive product demos, as well as plenty of fun STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) activities such as robotics, circuit building, and digital music creation brought to you by Geek Squad Academy. There will also be lots of prize giveaways, and a DJ onsite to keep the entertainment going.
