Tis the season to celebrate friends and family, and during the holidays celebrating often means buying and wrapping gifts for everyone you love. Gift wrapping, however pretty, isn’t made from sustainable materials. Last year, to highlight their commitment to the environment, Best Buy Canada created a holiday paper bag that doubled as sustainable wrapping paper.
The bags were so successful that Best Buy, along with their long-time partner BGC Canada (formerly Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada), have designed a new holiday bag. It features new artwork by a 9-year-old BGC Club member. What makes the bags sustainable is that they double as festive wrapping paper. Even more exciting, just like last year, the proceeds from the sale of the bags go to tech purchases for kids in BGC. The 2021 holiday campaign raised over $61,000 to buy tech for BGC Clubs across the country! Let’s take a look at the new paper bag.
Best Buy and BGC Canada launch the 2022 holiday paper bag
Formerly known as Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada, BGC Canada provides a safe, supportive place where kids and teens can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships, and develop confidence and skills for life. Over 200,000 kids and teens are served every year by BGCs in 736 different Club locations across Canada.
To show their commitment to the environment and celebrate their long-time partnership, Best Buy is excited to donate all 25 cents collected from the sale of each bag to BGC Canada. They can use the funds to purchase technology for their Clubs across the country. Beginning on Giving Tuesday (November 29, 2022), you can purchase a bag and use it as wrapping paper—reducing waste and helping to give back to your community at the same time.
2022 holiday paper bag design selected from BGC Club contest
Just like last year, Best Buy ran a contest in the spring for BGC Club members. They were asked to submit their artwork to be considered for this project. The 2022 penguin design was created by 9-year-old BGC Canada member Christy from Saint John, New Brunswick.
How Best Buy has helped BGC Canada
Since 2001, Best Buy has supported BGC Canada in many ways. They have provided more than $3 million in scholarships to over 400 students through their Best Buy Grade 10 scholarships. Over the holidays, local employees support BGC families through Best Buy’s Holiday Hamper program. During the pandemic, Best Buy also partnered with Lenovo and donated laptops to 650 BGC kids so they could stay connected when it mattered most. Many stores partner with local BGC Clubs to give back by providing new technology and volunteering their time in their community. Best Buy also worked with BGC to launch the very first Geek Squad Academy in Canada. Since then they have awarded camps to more BGC Clubs than any other organization.
More recently, Best Buy has funded microgrants to help young people create anti-racism initiatives, as well as given funding to support BGC’s equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) initiatives. They opened their first Teen Tech Centre in Canada at a BGC Club in 2021, which provides youth with the experience of cutting-edge technology to help them build skills for their future.
Best Buy launches holiday paper bag on Giving Tuesday
Just like last year, the new bag will launch on Giving Tuesday. If you’ve never heard of it, Giving Tuesday is the global movement that encourages people to give back and it takes place on the Tuesday following Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
This year, on Tuesday November 29th, you’ll begin to see these special holiday paper bags in store. They are limited edition, so they will only be available while supplies last.
How you can use Best Buy’s Holiday Paper Bag
The bags have enough space to hold the gifts you purchase at Best Buy, and once you’re home and you’re ready to wrap your presents, just open the bag and cut it to size so you can wrap your gifts. The paper used to make the bag is durable so it won’t tear. Plus, when your gifts are unwrapped, you can recycle the paper. Check out this video from 2021 for a demo of how you can wrap a gift with a holiday paper bag.
Best Buy Holiday Paper Bags are available on Giving Tuesday, November 29th, 2022
Best Buy’s holiday paper bags will be in stores soon. 100% of all proceeds from the 25-cent cost of the bag will be donated to BGC Canada, so be sure to pick up one or more of these limited edition bags while you can.
