Tis the season to celebrate friends and family, and during the holidays celebrating often means buying and wrapping gifts for everyone you love. Gift wrap, however pretty, can mean a lot of waste in our landfills. That’s just one of the reasons why Best Buy is launching a holiday paper bag for 2021. The bags are festive and have a unique design, but there’s more to Best Buy’s holiday paper bag than meets the eye.

Best Buy celebrates 20 years partnering with BGC Canada

In addition to celebrating the holidays, Best Buy is also celebrating a very special milestone this year: it’s the 20th anniversary of their partnership with BGC Canada (formerly Boys & Girls Clubs). BGC Clubs provide safe and supportive places for kids and teens to experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships, and develop confidence and skills for life. Over 200,000 kids and teens are served every year by BGC Clubs in 736 different locations across Canada.

Canada’s first-ever paper bag that turns into wrapping paper

The graphics on the Best Buy holiday paper bag are special because they were created by a BGC Club member. The bag is also special for another reason. Not only can it hold your packages on your way home from Best Buy, but when you’re ready to wrap your gifts the bag doubles as festive wrapping paper.

This is the first time any Canadian retailer has created this type of holiday bag. Using it as wrapping paper will help reduce your holiday paper waste, give you a great way to support BGC Canada, and brighten up your tree with its unique and festive design.

BGC Canada helped create Best Buy’s holiday paper bag

BGC Canada played a big part in the creation of the holiday paper bag. The bag itself features artwork designed by a BGC Club member. The artwork was chosen after Best Buy ran a contest in the spring for all BGC Club members. These members were encouraged to submit their artwork to be printed on the paper bag.

The design selected was created by 7-year-old BGC Canada member Mariah from Peel, ON.

Each bag will cost 25 cents, and the bag will be launched on Giving Tuesday. 100% of all proceeds from the sale of each bag will be donated to BGC Canada to help purchase technology for their Clubs across the country.

How Best Buy has helped BGC Canada

For the past 20 years, Best Buy has been committed to helping BGC Canada bring new technology to Canadian kids and teens. Since 2001 they have provided more than $3 million in scholarships to over 400 students through their Best Buy Grade 10 Scholarships. Over the holidays, local employees support BGC families through Best Buy’s Holiday Hamper program and many stores partner with local BGC Clubs to give back by providing new technology and volunteering their time in their community.

More recently, Best Buy has provided funding for microgrants that help young people create anti-racism initiatives and in 2021 they opened their first Teen Tech Centre in Canada at a BGC Club.   At the Teen Tech Centre, youth can experience cutting-edge technology to help them build skills for their future.

Best Buy launches holiday paper bag on Giving Tuesday

The bag will launch on Giving Tuesday. If you’ve never heard of it, Giving Tuesday is the global movement that encourages people to give back and it takes place on the Tuesday following Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

This year, on Tuesday November 30th, you’ll begin to see these special holiday paper bags in store. They are limited edition, so they will only be available while supplies last.

How you can use Best Buy’s Holiday Paper Bag

The bags have enough space to hold the gifts you purchase at Best Buy, and once you’re home and you’re ready to wrap your presents, just open the bag and cut it to size so you can wrap your gifts. The paper used to make the bag is durable so it won’t tear, and when your gifts are unwrapped you can recycle the paper.

Best Buy’s holiday paper bags will be in stores soon. 100% of all proceeds from the 25 cent cost of the bag will be donated to BGC Canada, so be sure to pick up one or more of these limited edition bags while you can.
