Just moments ago, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and LEGO videogame series developer, TT Games, announced LEGO Dimensions—an exciting new crossover game featuring many of your favourite LEGO universes and characters.
Imagine: LEGO versions of Batman, Gandalf, Wyldstyle, Wonder Woman, Gimli, Marty McFly (yes, the Marty McFly!)—all existing together, interacting with one another, and working as a team to save the LEGO multiverse from the evil Lord Vortech. That’s LEGO Dimensions.
A New, Thrilling Entry in the “Toys to Life” Gaming Genre
LEGO Dimensions is more than just a video game, it’s more akin to a full-on gaming platform similar to Skylanders, Disney Infinity, and Nintendo’s amiibo line of characters. If you want to know the backstory as to how and why the “toys to life” gaming genre became so incredibly huge, I recommend taking a read of Matt’s superb overview article from last year.
So what makes LEGO Dimensions different from the rest? Well, for starters, it’s LEGO! Just like with real LEGO toy packs, your first task in LEGO Dimensions is to build your minifigure heroes. Imagine the fun you can have with your family not only assembling a collection of adorable LEGO minifigures, but then placing them on the LEGO Toy Pad and transporting the characters into your LEGO Dimensions video game. Oh, and for even more fun, you can even construct the LEGO Gateway that gets placed onto the LEGO Toy Pad!
I’ve played practically all entries in the LEGO videogame franchise, from LEGO Batman 3, to The LEGO Movie Videogame, to LEGO The Hobbit, and I really can’t wait to give this new one a try. This series is widely known for its laugh out loud humourous moments, and I’m imagining all the funny encounters and dialogue that will ensue when all these characters and universes collide.
The Starter Pack
Like other “toys to life” franchises out there, the first step to jumping into the LEGO Dimensions experience is picking up the Starter Pack. Inside you’ll find:
- LEGO Dimensions videogame
- LEGO Toy Pad
- Bricks to build the LEGO Gateway
- 3 LEGO minifigures (Batman, Gandalf, and Wyldstyle)
- LEGO Batmobile vehicle
The LEGO Dimensions Starter Pack is releasing on September 27, 2015, and will be available on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and Wii U.
Once you’ve built your three LEGO characters, and the LEGO Gateway, you’re all set to start your new LEGO Dimensions adventure. It’s that simple!
The game itself revolves around an evil mastermind named Lord Vortech who has uncovered the secret of controlling the entire LEGO multiverse. By opening vortexes in various LEGO universes—including DC Comics, The Lord of the Rings, and The LEGO Movie—Lord Vortech assembles a legion of LEGO bad guys to help him fulfill his sinister plan. These vortexes also draw in LEGO heroes, like Batman, Gandalf, and Wyldstyle, who venture out to form an unstoppable LEGO team to thwart Lord Vortech’s scheme. Of course, plenty of hilarity is bound to occur when all these LEGO characters and worlds mix together in unexpected ways.
Yep, that’s Marty McFly being chased by the Wicked Witch and Gollum!
Expansion Packs Coming in 2015
To expand your LEGO Dimensions experience even further, this year Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment is unleashing tons of new levels, characters, gadgets, and vehicles. There are three types of “Packs” you can pick up, including:
Level Pack: Gives you a whole new mission-based level to explore, in addition to a new character, gadget and vehicle to use in-game.
Team Pack: For those who want to expand their collection, these packs include two minifigure characters and a vehicle or gadget for each.
Fun Pack: If you want a good variety, a Fun Pack will give you one minifigure and a vehicle or gadget, each with their own unique abilities in-game.
Featured LEGO universes you can expect to see include DC Comics, The Lord of the Rings, The LEGO Movie, LEGO Ninjago, Back to the Future, and The Wizard of Oz. More brands are expected to be announced in the future.
The first Level Pack to hit store shelves is Marty McFly (Back to the Future), and the first Team Pack will be Kai & Cole (LEGO Ninjago). The initial set of characters that you can buy in Fun Packs are:
- Wonder Woman (DC Comics)
- Cyborg (DC Comics)
- Gollum (The Lord of the Rings)
- Gimli (The Lord of the Rings)
- Legolas (The Lord of the Rings)
- Emmet (The LEGO Movie)
- Bad Cop (The LEGO Movie)
- Benny (The LEGO Movie)
- Unikitty (The LEGO Movie)
- Wicked Witch (The Wizard of Oz)
- Jay (LEGO Ninjago)
- Nya (LEGO Ninjago)
- Zane (LEGO Ninjago)
What a great list of heroes! Personally, I can’t wait to get my hands on The Lord of the Rings characters (always loved Gollum, perhaps out of pity), and I have to mention this again—Marty McFly! Back to the Future is one of my all-time favourite trilogies (watched it sooo many times), which is why it’s super exciting to see Marty rockin’ the guitar, and that LEGO DeLorean Time Machine is just too cute.
