This past weekend during Sega Fes 2019 at Bellesalle Akihabara in Tokyo, Sega announced the triumphant return of its beloved 16-bit console, the SEGA Genesis. Give a warm welcome and say hello to the SEGA Genesis Mini!
Launching September 19, 2019, the SEGA Genesis Mini is a smaller, lighter version of SEGA’s beloved 16-bit console. The SEGA Genesis first launched in the fall of 1989 and went on to sell between 18 to 18.5 million units in North America. While its competitors boasted higher technical specs, many Genesis games excelled in gameplay.
To say I’m thrilled about this announcement from Sega would be a massive understatement. The SEGA Genesis Mini allows you experience and play 40 of the greatest Genesis games of all-time, just plug and play.

What games come with the SEGA Genesis Mini?
The SEGA Genesis Mini comes with 40 of the best Genesis games. Although at the time of writing, Sega has only announced 10 games. Here is the list of the games that Sega has revealed so far:
- Ecco The Dolphin
- Castlevania Bloodlines
- Space Harrier II
- Shining Force
- Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine
- Toe Jam & Earl
- Comix Zone
- Sonic The Hedgehog
- Altered Beast
- Gunstar Heroes
We can expect a full list of games that will be included on the Genesis Mini in the coming months and weeks leading up to launch. If you’re familiar with the SEGA Genesis, you’ll know right away how incredible these announced games are. For those who have never owned a SEGA Genesis, these games represent some of best released on the system.
What’s included in the SEGA Genesis Mini box?
So, we’ve got a list of some of the games included with the system, but what else comes with the micro-sized console? Here is the full list of contents:
- SEGA Genesis Mini Console
- Two wired 3-button SEGA Genesis controllers
- USB Power Adapter
- Power Cable
- HDMI Cable
It’s great to see that Sega included both a USB power adapter and power cable. This means you can either plug into a USB port for power for an outlet. Additionally, I’m glad Sega is including two controllers. This means that you can play multiplayer out of the box!
The two included USB controllers look like exact replicas of the original SEGA Genesis controllers. They even include the iconic SEGA Genesis log and the exact button layout as the original controllers.

As a result of the huge popularity of other Plug N Play retro consoles, I fully expect the SEGA Genesis Mini to be one of the hottest items this Fall. With 40 games, full line up to be announced in the coming months and weeks, the SEGA Genesis Mini offers hundreds upon hundreds of hours of gameplay.
The SEGA Genesis helped define gaming during the 16-bit era and has some of the best games of its generation. The SEGA Genesis Mini allows you to either relive, or experience for the first time some of the most iconic video games in history.

I just finished reading the novel “Console Wars” and got the background story with the Genesis, perfect timing to go back and experience the “16-bit revolution” all over again!
Sega and Nintendo really duked it out during the Genesis and SNES era. I can hardly wait to play some of my favourite Genesis titles again.
I played a little Sega back in the day, but was primarily a Nintendo user. I am slightly interested in this console, I hope they do better emulation than the PS Classic did last year.
About $100 Canadian is only about $2.50 per game in the system, and that seems like a pretty good deal. I think I’ll keep an eye on this when it comes out.
Hi Ian,
I have no doubt the emulation is going to be fantastic! They have M2 working on it, the same group that did Sega Ages. I never broke the cost down per game but your right, $2.50 a game is pretty good. We should hear more games that will be included on the SEGA Genesis Mini soon.
Disappointed that the 6 button controllers are not included but yet the Japanese version does.
Hi Mill,
I am not sure why Sega choose to go with the 3-button controllers here for North America. Maybe we will hear something from Sega as to the reason why.
These are the same bundle of lackluster games they released though Playstation 2 and 3. If this is their first round of announced games of their ‘best of’, you can bet the othr games they announce will be even worse. I will be making a hard pass on this.
Hi Josh,
What games would you like to see announced for the SEGA Genesis Mini that would change your mind?
Do you know how long the controller cord length is?
Hi Brett,
Unfortunately I am not sure what the controller cord length is. I will try and find out for you and let you know.
