Virtual Currency and Pack Colours explained
Wondering what NBA 2K16 “Virtual Currency” is? It’s the in-game currency that is used to purchase a wide variety of content, and in NBA 2K15, this consisted of virtual goods (uniforms, equipment, apparel), MyPLAYER attributes, and new animations for your characters. As for the “Emerald” and “Gold” packs, each colour represents a different type of a player, with Emerald players tending to be rising stars, while Gold are considered the top tier players.
There are limited quantities of the NBA 2K16 Tip-Off Edition, so if you want to play the game before its official release date, and receive the additional bonus content, be sure to pre-order now!
Three Cover Athletes in this year’s edition
For NBA 2K16, 2K Games chose not one, but three different NBA stars to grace the cover. They are:
- James Harden of the Houston Rockets
- Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors
- Anthony Davis of the New Orleans Pelicans
What’s really neat is that each copy of the game comes with a tri-fold insert of all three cover athletes, letting you fold and re-insert the cover with your favourite design!
A Spike Lee Joint
If you look closely at the box art image of NBA 2K16 (seen near the top-right of this article), you’ll notice the curious words “Featuring a Spike Lee joint”. That’s because 2K Games hired Spike Lee as the director and writer of NBA 2K16‘s MyCareer mode! This is going to be a full career mode that will take you all the way from being a top high school basketball player, to an elite star of the NBA. Given Lee’s tremendous talent in filmmaking, I can’t wait to see the rich story he’s crafted for this game!
During the NBA playoffs, a commercial starring Lee aired, giving us a small sample of what we can look forward to:
With just over two months until NBA 2K16 launches, there are plenty of reasons to be excited. In addition to all of the above, 2K Games promises this year’s edition will be “one of the most groundbreaking sports titles in video game history,” and will combine exciting new features with true-to-life authenticity. I can’t wait to see more in the weeks to come!

Ok I think I’m in for this one. I just hope my player doesn’t get drafted by the Detroit Pistons again. A 3 point shooting point guard that doesn’t play physical doesn’t fit in well with the bad boys of the NBA. Bill Laimbeer and Vinnie Johnson would never stand for it!
