Miitopia is an adventure, role-playing game starring Nintendo’s cute and cartoony Mii characters. It’s a story you can personalize using Mii characters you’ve created on your Nintendo Nintendo Switch. Not only can you create a band of Mii heroes, but you can also design some enemies and NPCs. No doubt about it, this is one of the cutest RPGs I’ve ever played.

Put a stop to the face-stealing Dark Lord
Miitopia‘s story is pretty straight-forward: one day in a tranquil land the evil Dark Lord arrives and steals Mii faces. These missing Mii faces start showing up on monsters and causing havoc in the kingdom. As a courageous Mii spared from this tragedy it’s your job to gather other Mii heroes and retrieve the faces.
If you like making Miis as much as I do, then you’ll love Miitopia. You are given the option to create Miis for every single character in the game. When you enter a new town you are given a description of each character and you can jump straight into the Mii creator to create them. It’s a neat way to customize the look and feel of the game to your liking.
Enjoyable, light-hearted gameplay
Before you start your adventure, you must choose a job and personality for them. Your typical jobs such as warrior, thieves, clerics and mages are all here to choose from. There are even some off the wall jobs like pop star, chef and cat—no, I’m not joking.
Each of the jobs have their own skills such as fireballs and singing to your enemies, which your Mii learns as you level up throughout the adventure. Additionally, depending on what personality you choose, your Mii will get perks. For example, energetic Miis can sometimes survive lethal blows. Picking jobs and personalities that complement each other is important as you’ll meet many allies on your adventure.
For the most part, Miitopia is an RPG that plays itself. Your characters will automatically walk across land and through dungeons. During battles you’ll control your main Mii, but all your partners will be controlled by the CPU. This certainly makes the game easy and accessible, ideal for someone playing their very first RPG. Experienced RPG fans will find Miitopia extremely easy, though I still had fun given how funny Mii characters can be.
Cartoony visuals and a decent soundtrack
Compared to its 3DS counterpart, Miitopia on the Nintendo Switch looks impressive. Overall the game has a lot more detail in the environments and it even has reflections in cave settings. The character animation is now a lot smoother and the Mii’s facial expressions really stand out. Miitopia was never meant to be a realistic looking game and its cartoony visuals are a perfect fit on the Switch.
On the other hand, when it comes to the game’s soundtrack it’s nothing to write home about. It’s decent, but you won’t find yourself whistling or humming it, which is a rarity for a Nintendo game. However, the game’s soundtrack fits the bill when it needs to. For example, it’s cheery when it needs to be and raises the intensity for things like big encounters.
It’s all about growing friendships and team building
As you make your way through the adventure, you’ll come across Inns where you can rest and relax. However, while at an Inn your Miis can get to know each other and become better friends. For example, friendships level up by staying in the same room with another Mii at the Inn.
Or, by sending two Miis out on a day together with outting tickets. Growing friendships unlock new abilities that you can use in battle such as cooperative attacks that help take out some of the pesky enemies.
Amongst all the comradery, your Miis engage in a steady stream of cute, clever dialogue. It’s the friendship building and the dialogue back and forth between the characters that is the main reason you’ll enjoy playing this game. I found myself more interested in what my Miis were doing, their likes and dislikes and what would happen next in their friendships more so than the main story.
Miitopia is a perfect game for younger players
If you enjoy Nintendo games like Tomodachi Life or the StreetPass Mii Plaza games then you’ll surely enjoy Miitopia. It’s light-hearted, easy-breezy, and full of Mii charm. Younger gamers with a Nintendo Switch will also likely have a lot of fun with this game. It’s a roughly 30-hour adventure, too, so it’ll keep the gamer in your house busy for some time.
