The Square Enix showcase returns to E3 2018

It has been a few years since Square Enix held its last showcase at E3. This year, Square Enix decided to showcase some of its most anticipated upcoming games. While today’s showcase was only 30 minutes in length, we got a better look at some of the exciting upcoming games.

Let’s take a look at the highlights of Square Enix’s E3 showcase 2018.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

The first game shown was Eidos Montreal’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Although video of the game was shown at Microsoft’s Xbox press conference yesterday, Square Enix gave us a further glimpse into the game.

The trailer started with an intense plane scene hurling down into the jungle. We got to follow Lara as she silently made her way though the jungle taking out her enemies with great precision. Back in April, Melanie got a chance to go hands on with Shadow of the Tomb Raider and was quite impressed. You can read more about it in her Shadow of the Tomb Raider trailer reveal event article.

Final Fantasy XIV Online x Monster Hunter World

One of the most popular MMO games, Final Fantasy XIV Online is set to get a free update sometime this summer called Under the Moonlight. While we don’t know everything that it will contain, we do know that Monster Hunter World content is on its way.

Monster Hunter World fans will be happy to know that Rathalos will be part of this massive Final Fantasy XIV and Monster Hunter World cross over. Take a look at the trailer below and you’ll know why I am more than excited for this epic cross over.

The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit

DONTNOD Entertainment’s newest game in the Life is Strange universe is called The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit. It is a digital game, which launches in a few weeks on June 26, 2018 and is absolutely free. If you’ve played Life is Strange than you know the one-of-a-kind narrative experiences DONTNOD’s games provide.

You play as Chris, a 10-year little old boy, who wants to be a superhero. Like most kids, he loves toys and has a giant imagination that takes him on all kinds of adventures. Though today is not one of his usual adventures. Today something truly extraordinary will happen to Chris.

A brand new trailer of Square Enix’s upcoming JRPG Dragon Quest XI Echoes of An Elusive Age was shown. This game is an all-new standalone experience with all-new characters, an exquisitely detailed and beautiful world, an immersive story, and finely tuned strategic combat.

Dragon Quest XI Echoes of An Elusive Age is coming exclusively this September 4th to the PlayStation 4.

A brand new IP from PlatinumGames—Babylon’s Fall

In what was a complete surprise, Square Enix announced that it was working in collaboration with PlatinumGames to bring a brand-new IP to the PlayStation 4 in 2019. Not a whole lot is known about Babylon’s Fall but based on the trailer shown it looks to be an epic fantasy action experience.

Check out the trailer below to see for your self just how intriguing this game looks.

NieR Automata comes to Xbox One

Xbox One owners will finally have a chance to play one of the best action role-playing games of all time on June 26, 2018. Titled NieR: Automata: BECOME AS GODS Edition, this version will include all released DLC.

Octopath Traveler

We got a brief look at Square Enix’s retro looking JRPG for the Nintendo Switch, Octopath Traveler. Launching on July 13, 2018 the game follows eight different characters on an epic journey. Using the feedback received from the demo, the game has seen improvements such as faster movement speed and changes to the look of the world.

Having grown up on classic 8 and 16-bit JRPGs, Octopath Traveler is high on my want list.

Just Cause 4

Avalanche Studios’ open world game Just Cause 4 was shown. It gave us a better look the weather system and focused on massive destruction. This time around you will have to deal with extreme weather, including tornadoes, blizzards, lightning and sand storms.

There are more grapples, boosters, new vehicles, car transporters, cranes, and even wrecking balls. Just Cause 4 launches December 4, 2018 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The Quiet Man comes digitally to PlayStation 4

The Quiet Man is coming digitally to PlayStation 4. It takes players beyond sound and words to deliver an immersive story-driven cinematic action experience. The trailer shown was brief, but grabbed my attention. I am curious to find out more about this game, which according to the trailer will be this August.

Kingdom Hearts III comes to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One January 2019

Kingdom Hearts III was shown and was mostly the same as what was shown at the Xbox press conference yesterday. If you are a Disney and Kingdom Hearts fan, then Kingdom Hearts III looks to be the best in the series to date.

I’ll just keep quiet while you watch this trailer below, enjoy!

Final thoughts

Square Enix’s showcase featured a few new unannounced games that I am really interested in learning more about. The mysterious Final Fantasy VII remake was absent from the showcase. And, left many fans including myself wondering what is going on with it. Who knows, maybe we will see it later tonight at the PlayStation press conference or later this year.

Overall, I am happy with what Square Enix showed today, even if we already knew about many of the games. Let me know in the comments section below which game you are most interested in.
