Treyarch pulled back the curtain on Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s multiplayer modes in a special announcement. The trailer was a pulse pounding tour-de-force entirely showcased on the PlayStation 5. The game will be the first Call of Duty to launch on next-gen consoles, and will also be available on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Activision doubled down on their cross-play commitment in a big way. Black Ops Cold War not only offers cross-play, but cross-progression, cross-generation play and integration with Warzone.
Let’s dig in to all the declassified multiplayer details for an in-depth look at what to expect when the game launches November 13th.

A blast from the past in Deniable Ops
So far all of what we’ve seen around the multiplayer character and map designs are based in Cold War-era settings. The reveal showed off new weapons, game modes, kill streaks and more.
Multiplayer battle grounds were no different, steeped in Cold War visuals set in locations around the globe. Players will battle in scorching deserts, frigid forests and a variety of urban settings.
The maps that were shown off were from the Angolan desert (Map name: Satellite), the frozen forests of Uzbekistan (Crossroads), South Beach (Miami), and the battleship filled waters of the North Atlantic (Armada). You’ll even duke it out in the U.S.S.R. right in the heart of Moscow.
Armada particularly caught my attention during the briefing, it looks like a playground of multiplayer mayhem! This map lets you zipline from ship to ship, skip around rough waters on jet skis and control gunboats.
New and familiar multiplayer modes
Fan favorite modes like Team Deathmatch, Search & Destroy, Domination, and Kill Confirmed will all make their returns in Black Ops Cold War. They will also be joined by new experiences like VIP Escort, Combined Arms, and Fireteam. Great news for Black Ops 4 fans, Control will be joining the multiplayer offerings as well! Here’s a breakdown of what to expect from each new multiplayer mode:
VIP Escort will have a 6v6 objective based mode where you need to protect or eliminate a VIP.
Combined Arms goes big, bringing together both infantry and vehicles in large detailed environments. Depending on the map, you’ll have access to tanks, snowmobiles, attack choppers and even jet skis, it’s sure to provide some incredible showdowns.
Black Ops’ newest multiplayer category is 40-player Fireteam with up to 10 teams of four. Not only will players need to contend with foes, but other environmental hazards will be present. An example of this is the game type, Dirty Bomb, which will be revealed by Treyarch in the coming weeks.
Declassified gameplay
Treyarch’s signature combat is back along with deniable operations and a more connected experience. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will be “boots on the ground” gameplay built on the familiar Blacks Ops DNA that fans love.
The Create-a-Class system is now improved with slot-based loadouts. These automatically give players primary, secondary, lethal and tactical equipment, a Field Upgrade, and a set of Perks. Newly added Field Upgrades will allow you to help your team or hinder your opponents with in-game boosts.
Weapons will have a new sound engine with three-dimensional audio. This will help players hone in on enemy and friendly fire. You can also head over to the Gunsmith to fine tune your weapon in greater detail. This lets you add 54 attachments to primary guns, across eight different attachment points.
Scorestreaks also return but with new parameters, the biggest change is that they are now kept through death. This will allow all players to have a better chance to deploy them. Streaks will also now have cooldowns to avoid players spamming and abusing them.
