Captivating and heartfelt narratives
In Another Code Recollection, the story takes centre stage with a captivating and heartfelt narrative that is filled with intriguing mysteries. The collection consists of two games: Two Memories and Journey into Lost Memories, each offering a unique story while maintaining a cohesive storyline. Without giving too much away, let’s take a look at the stories in each of the 2 games.
In Two Memories, you assume the role of Ashley Mizuki Robins, a young girl who believed her parents were deceased. However, on her 14th birthday, Ashley receives a mysterious device called the DAS, which shatters her perception by revealing that her father is alive. Fueled by a determination to uncover the truth about her family, as Ashley, you travel to Blood Edward Island. As you uncover the island’s secrets, you gradually unravel the truth behind your parents’ disappearance and the mysterious ANOTHER program.
Journey into Lost Memories picks up Ashley’s story two years later. Now living with her aunt, Ashley sets out on a new adventure to the Lake Juliet, seeking to reunite with her father once again. This chapter of Ashley’s story goes deeper into the mysteries surrounding her family, skillfully tying up loose ends from the first game.
Through both games, you witness firsthand Ashley’s personal development and the complexities of her relationships with her family. And, what I really liked about this collection of games is how the narrative seamlessly weaves together themes of self-discovery, resilience, and the significance of family bonds. In the end, you are treated to heartfelt and engaging stories that really resonates with the challenges and triumphs of growing up.
Gameplay mechanics that remain faithful to the original games while incorporating new additions
Another Code Recollection combines elements of visual novels and point-and-click adventure games. The gameplay mechanics remain faithful to the original games while incorporating new additions that enhance and modernize the overall experience. Most notably is the transition to full 3D environments. The character models are crisp and expressive, adding depth to the interactions with NPCs and breathing new life into the game, allowing for more immersive exploration and interaction. Another notable change is that you now have fully controllability of the camera. This allows you to easily navigate and examine the world around you.
However, camera control isn’t perfect. It’s occasionally inconsistent and sometimes it gets caught on the environment or sticks too closely to Ashley. Luckily, it doesn’t happen to often and didn’t impact my overall gameplay experience. In terms of puzzles, Another Code Recollection strikes a balance between accessibility and satisfying complexity. The puzzles are cleverly designed, requiring you to think critically and use the items you have found throughout the game. Initially, some puzzles had me stumped. However, eventually solving these puzzles felt extremely rewarding and gratifying.
Additionally, Another Code Recollection introduces new features, such as the ability to buy items from the gift shop and drink cans that can be recycled for coins. While these additions may not really have a significant impact on the game’s storylines, it’s small details like this that add another layer of realism and immersion to each of the games. Finally, Another Code Recollection includes new features such as the ability to take pictures with the DAS device and layer them to reveal clues. I found this to be a really neat new feature and it added a new layer of interactivity and puzzle-solving to the gameplay.
Upgraded visuals and sound
Another Code Recollection is a visual leap from the original games. As a result, they bring the games to life in a new way. With more detailed character models and the ability to now see more expressions, it allows you to connect with the characters on a deeper level. However, as with the camera control, the visuals aren’t perfect. Sometimes environmental textures can be inconsistent, with some areas lacking the same level of detail as the characters. Regardless, the overall visuals are a welcomed addition.
The audio design in Another Code Recollection really stands out. The games feature beautiful soundtracks that enhance the emotional moments and adds depth to the overall experience. I found that the music, particularly the piano compositions, created a relaxing ambiance that went well with the onscreen gameplay perfectly.
Another Code Recollection is a worthwhile journey for both newcomers and fans of the series
Another Code Recollection, while not perfect, successfully brings back the nostalgic charm of the original games while introducing new elements that enhance the overall experience.
