Samsung has always been a tech leader in TVs, computer monitors, and appliances, so it’s not surprising they are at the forefront of a movement to reduce, reuse, and recycle. The company has just announced a few new initiatives designed to create a more sustainable environment.
Give your TV box a second life
Whether you choose a QLED, New QLED, or LED TV, the packing box your new TV comes in is meant to secure your purchase until you get it home safe and sound. Samsung has recognized there can be a lot of waste in packaging materials, and that’s why they have worked to replace more of their packaging with sustainable choices.
The new TV boxes are made from thick corrugated cardboard, and they are specially designed so you can reuse them. Customers can give their packaging a second life by creating useful household items from their boxes. All they have to do is follow a guide on the eco-package website and they can make cute cat houses, side tables, and more.
There are quite a few different projects to choose from, and which you can create will depend on which Samsung TV you choose. The instructions are easy to follow, only require a box cutter and pencil to map and cut, and you can add your own paint or colour when you’re done building. It’s a great way to reuse a large box that would normally end up in a recycling bin, and your pet will love you for it.
Samsung boxes now use water-based printing
In 2019 Samsung transitioned to the use of water-based printing on their boxes. Water-based inks are environmentally safer to produce, allow for a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and are part of the brand’s overall plan to reduce the company’s carbon footprint.
Water-based inks have the advantage over other types of ink in that they contain minimal amounts of VOC (volatile organic compound). VOCs in water-based ink has 1/4 the emission rate as solvent-based inks. Water-based inks also become softer over time and will degrade easier than plastic-based ink.
Samsung’s solar remote control
One of the best new ways Samsung is reducing its impact on the environment is by putting an environmentally-friendly spin on a device you use every day—your TV’s remote control. They have designed the eco-friendly SolarCell Remote. Available with new Samsung TVs, it’s made from recycled materials, and it can be charged by sunlight, indoor light, and radio waves.
The SolarCell Remote is just like other remotes, but you’ll love how you never have to replace the batteries on your remote. I tested out the SolarCell Remote myself when I reviewed one of the latest Samsung TVs and I loved it. It can maintain a charge for up to 2 years, and it’s very easy to place it in the sun for a quick charge whenever you aren’t using it.
