Philips Hue has announced its newest component designed to help bring smart lighting and special effects to your TV or gaming screen is now available in Canada. The Philips Hue Play HDMI Sync Box can be found here.

Philips Hue HDMI Sync Box now available

The new box connects directly to your TV and lets you connect up to four components and peripherals so you can personalize your Hue lighting experience and have it match what’s happening on your TV. Up to ten lights will be able to mimic the action on screen, creating a whole-room entertainment area.

Philips Hue: What’s new?

Previously the Philips Hue Play light bar system was designed mainly for computer gaming, and could mimic the colours of the lights to what was happening on your screen. There was a way to hack this to get the lighting effects to play on your TV but it was a bit of a process (read about the Hue Play Light Bars and my hacks in this review). Now with the Hue HDMI Sync box, you can get the lights to adapt seamlessly to what’s happening on TV without the hacking, and without extra steps.

Easier set up: no hacking!

Philips says the setup process has been dramatically scaled back. A simpler setup allows you to easily connect the Sync Box to your Hue Bridge and use it immediately with any TV and any HDMI device. Also new are on-HDMI control buttons meaning you can control your entertainment experience and sync box any way you want—via the Hue Play app or on the device

Use Sync Box to control all your Philips Hue lights

The Hue sync box is designed to get the Hue Play Bars, which are placed behind or beside your TV, to flash, morph and match the colours of the video picture, but using the Philips Hue app, you can rope in other Philips Hue Smart lights in your home too and they’ll also mimic these effects. For example, the Play Bars will light up the area around your TV, while any overhead bulbs will also adapt and change colours to the overall scene, as will any lamps or light strips too. Just imagine the scene of a major blockbuster action flick, and when a building explodes, your whole room lights up so you really feel immersed in the movie. It’s pretty cool.
