Spring seems to have finally arrived here on the West Coast and this means it’s patio season. The patio is a great place to entertain guests, have a lovely meal with family or just relax and put your feet up with a good book and catch some rays. For the last nine years I never really had a patio, but my husband, kids and I recently moved into a new home with a beautiful back deck that I can’t wait to enjoy. If you’re looking to spruce up your patio this season there are many options to design a patio on a budget.
Seating on a budget
There’s a variety of options when it comes to seating for your patio. Are you looking for a table and chairs for eating or something to lounge on, read a good book and get your daily dose of vitamin D.
A great way to get the most out of a purchase is to find a deal on a set. A classic table and chairs for outdoor meals or a wicker set for comfort and entertaining are two popular styles. I love that you can then customize your seating by adding fun and vibrant cushions and I would recommend buying cushions for outdoor use as they will be more durable and withstand the changes in weather. Another good tip to keep your cushions lasting longer is to store them overnight or when it’s raining. You can also find some durable covers for tables and chairs to lengthen your outdoor furniture’s lifespan.
If your main goal for outdoor seating is lounging then you may want to consider a swing, swing chair or hammock.
Create privacy or shelter
Another way to add some design to your patio on a budget is by creating some privacy or shelter from the elements with an umbrella or gazebo. While it’s nice to get some sun, too much sun can cause sun burn or heat stroke and isn’t good for your skin long term. With an umbrella or gazebo, you can enjoy the heat without direct sun exposure.
A gazebo is the perfect way to enjoy some outdoor living space year-round as well. They are sturdy and durable and will keep you dry on rainy days. Summer doesn’t always mean sunny skies, we do get some rain, but I love that it’s still warm enough to enjoy the outdoors. Take a cozy blanket and a great book and get some fresh air under your gazebo.
Umbrella’s are another option for privacy and shelter. You can find ones to fit into a designated umbrella stand for your patio set to enjoy a meal al fresco or choose a larger free-standing umbrella to create a large shaded area. Many umbrellas also have a button that when pressed allows the umbrella to tilt, you can then move the umbrella with the sun to always have shade where you need it.
Lighting your patio
There are some beautiful lighting options for your outdoor space. Choose from wall sconces, hanging lights, post lights, tiki torches and more to create a warm and inviting space to enjoy in the evenings. If you have a lot of trees in your yard, string lighting is the way to go and I love solar lights as well to light up a walkway or path.
Patio season is here, and hopefully to stay going forward, so why not give your patio design a boost on a budget this spring.
