Final Fantasy VII Rebirth launch date announced and story revealed

Quite possibly the biggest news from September’s State of Play was the February 29, 2024 launch date announcement and gameplay trailer of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on PS5. Not only did we learn of the game’s launch date, but we also learned about this highly anticipated game’s story. The trailer shown focused on famous Final Fantasy VII characters like Cloud, Aerith, Barret, and Tifa.

The game takes place after Final Fantasy VII Remake and the trailer gave us glimpses of new playable friends, such as Yuffie, a skilled ninja from Wutai’s top-notch group of operatives, Red XIII, a creature with a fiery tail who offers advice to Cloud’s group, and Cait Sith, a witty, cat-shaped robot often perched on his large moogle companion. Together, they embark on a mission to track down Sephiroth, who is determined to take over the world.

Additionally, the trailer showcased the game’s new synergy moves from the battle system. By using up a gauge charge, similar to Limit Breaks, this new gameplay mechanic allows you to use synergy commands and abilities at anytime. Furthermore, the developers have added skill trees which allow you to unlock synergy abilities. Of course these are only a few abilities that will be in the final game which will allow you to customize and build your character loadouts as you see fit. If you are a Final Fantasy fan, you definitely aren’t going to want to miss out on this one come February 29, 2024.

New Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora trailer

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is launching on PlayStation 5 on December 7, 2023 and during State of Play, Ubisoft debuted a brand new trailer for the game. This brand new trailer was centered around the game’s story and showcased some of the amazingly beautiful environments that are in the game.

In the game, you play as a Na’vi who, as a baby, was taken by the RDA as part of The Ambassador Program and taught to live like a human. You’ve been separated from your home world, Pandora, and your own people. You belong to the Sarentu clan, a respected group that everyone believed had vanished many years ago. During the Battle of the Hallelujah Mountains, which occurred in the first Avatar movie, you were placed in emergency cryosleep while the RDA left Pandora. Now, 15 years later, you awaken and find yourself on Pandora, a stranger in the place where you were born.

Ubisoft has had this game in development for a while, and I’m excited to play it this November. If you pre-order Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora on PlayStation 5, you will get bonus in-game content with the Child of Two Worlds Pack including a character cosmetic set and a weapon skin.

Last, but certainly not least, PlayStation debuted brand new exciting colour line of DualSense wireless controllers and PS5 console cover colours called Deep Earth Collection. Launching later this year, the Deep Earth Collection features Volcanic Red, Cobalt Blue and Sterling Silver controller and console covers. The Sterling Silver DualSense wireless controller and PS5 console cover will launch on January 26, 2024. As mentioned earlier, the PlayStation Portal streams games directly from PS5. This means you need a PS5 that is connected to the internet. And, games installed on your PS5 to use PlayStation Portal.

The PlayStation Portal has a 3.5mm audio jack for wired audio but does not support Bluetooth. However, it does support PlayStation Link, PlayStations new wireless audio technology. More on that below. Oddly enough, PlayStation Portal does not support games that are streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium’s cloud streaming service. And, PS VR2 games that require the headset to play are not supported by the PlayStation Portal.

The PlayStation Portal is scheduled to launch later this year, a Canadian price has not yet been announced. Stay tuned to the Best Buy Blog for pricing and pre-orders of the PlayStation Portal in the near future.

This brand new headset features lossless audio, a retractable boom mic, AI-enhanced background noise reduction and a charging hanger to charge and store the headset.

This will provide an auditory experience that is usually found in headphones for professional sound engineers.

Both the Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore audio devices will be available later this year. As with the PlayStation Portal, Canadian pricing has not yet been announced. Stay tuned to the Best Buy Blog for pricing and pre-orders of the PlayStation Portal in the near future.

The Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore connect directly to the PlayStation Portal using a new wireless audio technology called PlayStation Link. This technology provides clear and fast audio with no delays. And, it’s easy to switch between different devices connected to PlayStation Link.

For example, with the Pulse Explore earbuds, you can be connected to your PS5 using PlayStation Link. And, you can also be connected to your mobile phone through Bluetooth. This means that when playing on the PS5, you can quickly answer a call and listen to it through the same earbuds.

PlayStation Showcase 2023

It’s been 2 years since the last PlayStation Showcase and today during an hour long digital event, PlayStation revealed 33 games. Sony gave updates on games from PlayStation Studios and key third party publishers. Amongst the many announcements we saw new gameplay trailers for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Destiny 2: the Final Shape, Alan Wake 2 and more.

Let’s take a look at some of the highlights from the PlayStation Showcase 2023.

Project Q and the first official PlayStation earbuds announced

During the PlayStation Showcase 2023, Sony announced Project Q. This is a device for playing games installed on your PS5 and streamed over WiFi. The Project Q, final name to be announced at a later date, will have a 8-inch LCD screen and will display games up to 1080p and 60fps. It will also feature both the adaptive triggers and haptic feedback of the DualSense. More information will be coming in the months ahead.

In addition to Project Q, Sony announced their first official wireless earbuds offering lossless audio on PS5 and PC. Again more details to come in the months ahead.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Insomniac Games / Sony Interactive Entertainment

Roughly 2 years after first being announced, Insomniac Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment showed the first-ever gameplay footage of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which is scheduled to launch Fall 2023.  The gameplay reveal was centered around a new group of enemies called Kraven’s Hunters who are chasing after Dr. Curt Connors, also known as The Lizard. Peter has to put a stop to their plans. The trailer starts off at Connors’ house in Queens, which is one of the brand-new areas you can explore and play in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

The game features Peter Parker, the original Spider-Man, but he’s wearing the iconic and beloved Black Suit and has a few new tricks up his sleeve. This time around Spider-Man is much more aggressive with new takedowns, parries, and new combat animations. In Spider-Man 2 the team at Insomniac Games focused on delving into Peter’s personal relationship with the Black Suit and how it affects those closest to him. However, Peter Parker isn’t the only playable character in the game, Miles Morales returns and is a key character in the story. And, what’s really neat about this is that you can near-instantly switch between both playable characters.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage

Ubisoft, Ubisoft Bordeaux, Ubisoft Montreal

First announced last summer, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, which is the 13th major installment in the Assassin’s Creed series, got its first gameplay trailer and release date announced today during the PlayStation Showcase 2023 digital event. The game is scheduled to come out on October 12, 2023 and the game takes visuals, stories and gameplay back to the franchise’s roots. This time around you play as Basim, a resourceful and versatile Assassin, in the Golden Age of Baghdad.

In the gameplay trailer, there were several new features shown. One of them is called Assassin’s Focus, which lets Basim mark and eliminate multiple targets in a row. You’ll also have access to classic Assassin tools like throwing knives and smoke bombs. A fresh addition to the parkour moves is the Pole Vault. Remaining true to his Hidden Ones training, Basim prefers to move quietly and take a stealthy approach when hunting and attacking his targets.

The game includes Blackbox missions that offer different opportunities for Basim to take advantage of and assist him in reaching his objectives. The gameplay trailer also introduced a new character, Fuladh, who is a Rafiq and Eagle-Master to the Hidden Ones and plays an important role in Basim’s journey to become a Hidden One. Finally, several familiar elements from previous games make their return. The corner swing, which allows you to swing around corners smoothly and the ability to easily vault over objects and use “elevators” to quickly get to higher areas are some elements making a return.

Sony further outlined the process of transferring digital games, game data and game saves from your PS4 to your PS5. This is done by using an ethernet cable or by connecting with WiFi. And, PS Plus members can sync PS4 game saves onto PS5 through cloud storage.

It’s important to note that if you have games or game data on an external USB drive, you can bring them over to your PS5 with that drive. Finally, Sony noted that the ability to transfer game saves between the PS4 version of a game and the PS5 version is up to each developer.

  • Both the PS Move Motion Controllers and the PlayStation VR Aim Controller will work with supported PS VR games on PS5.
