Sneak peak at the PS5’s user experience

With under a month to go before launch, PlayStation has given fans what they have been asking for, a look at the console’s user experience. Today, PlayStation posted an 11-minute video, below, showing what the user experience will look like and some of the new features.

One of the first features you will see is the Control Center. By pressing the PlayStation button on the DualSense controller, you get immediate access to almost everything you need from the system without leaving the game. Games now feature Activities, which are represented by cards in the Control Center and allow you see things you missed in a game, go directly into levels or challenges and more. Some activities feature video hints that allow you to watch in a picture-in-picture mode while you play.

Take a look at the video below and see these features and more in action on PlayStation 5.

Updated details on backwards compatibility

Sony has revealed that over 99% of the 4,000 PS4 games will be playable on PS5 as of the console launch. In fact, there are only 10 games that are currently not backwards compatible. In fact, Sony has stated that games that are only playable on PS4 will be listed in the PlayStation Store as “PS4 only”.

All of your PS4 games that have been purchased digitally, will be available for download on PlayStation 5. On the other hand, physical PS4 games must be inserted into the disc drive of your PS5 and it will be downloaded onto your PS5. Just like on PS4, every time you want to play the game, you will have to insert the disc into the drive to play.

Additionally, certain PS4 games will benefit from the PS5’s power with faster load times and more stable frame rates. And, some games that have unlocked frame rates or dynamic resolution up to 4K may run even better.

Transferring PS4 digital games and game saves to PlayStation 5

Sony further outlined the process of transferring digital games, game data and game saves from your PS4 to your PS5. This is done by using an ethernet cable or by connecting with WiFi. And, PS Plus members can sync PS4 game saves onto PS5 through cloud storage.

It’s important to note that if you have games or game data on an external USB drive, you can bring them over to your PS5 with that drive. Finally, Sony noted that the ability to transfer game saves between the PS4 version of a game and the PS5 version is up to each developer.

PlayStation 5 Teardown video from Sony

Today, Sony released an official teardown video of their upcoming next-generation console, PlayStation 5. There is a lot of technology under the hood of the PS5 and the video gives us a good look at it. As a result, one of the first things you’ll notice in the video is the size of the PlayStation 5. Even though measurements for PS5 were released last month, seeing a physical PS5 puts things into perspective.

Furthermore, other points of interest in the video include SSD expansion slot, 120mm cooling fan, and the PS5’s massive heatsink. Moreover, Sony has made it clear that the PS5 will be whisper quiet and now we have a good idea of what they had to do to make this possible.

Sony releases PlayStation 5’s first global ad

The marketing for Sony’s next generation has begun with the company’s first global ad for PS5. The ad, below, showcases haptic feedback from the DualSense controller, PlayStation 5’s Tempest 3D AudioTech and the DualSense’s adaptive triggers.

PS4 peripherals & accessories backwards compatibility

Many have been wondering about what existing PS4 peripherals and accessories will work on PS5. In early August, Sony made an official announcement regarding compatibility. However, the biggest bit of news out of the announcement was that DualShock 4 controllers can only be used to play PS4 games.

  • Speciality peripherals, such as officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks, will work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games.
  • The Platinum and Gold Wireless Headsets, as well as third-party headsets that connect via USB port or audio jack, will work on PS5 (the headset companion app is not compatible with PS5).
  • The DualShock 4 wireless controller and PlayStation officially licensed third-party gamepad controllers will work with supported PS4 games.
  • Both the PS Move Motion Controllers and the PlayStation VR Aim Controller will work with supported PS VR games on PS5.
  • The PlayStation Camera will work with PS5 for playing supported PS VR games. It will require an adaptor that Sony will provide at no additional cost to PS VR users. Details on how to get the adaptor will be announced later.

  1. Will my PS5 arrive at my house Nov.12? Or will Bestbuy wait to ship until November.12? I’ve heard most retailers ship earlier so the units are at customer doorsteps on release day. I really hope Bestbuy is one of those retailers.

    Thanks

    • The games are:
      -DWVR
-Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma Volume One
-TT Isle of Man – Ride on the Edge 2
      -Just Deal With It!
      -Shadow Complex Remastered
      -Robinson: The Journey
      -We Sing
      -Hitman Go: Definitive Edition
      -Shadwen
      -Joe’s Diner

  2. Am I correct in assuming bestbuy will still have PS5’s on day one of launch? I’d imagine online stock differs from brick and mortar shops. At this point if one hasn’t pre-ordered you’ll have better odds of grabbing one yourself on day one, but you’ll be camping outside for 10+ hrs.

    • Hi Mike, we do not have the answer to that question yet. The gaming team at Best Buy will advise me on the status of inventory when they have the answers, and then I’ll post the updated information here on the blog in a comment.

      Best regards,
      Martin

  3. Do you know if it supports external hard drive saving etc or if we can upgrade the internal drive? I can see the digital one coming up short because of this.

  4. Do you have any information about when pre-orders start in Canada? I’m also surprised by those prices. I thought the $499 US would stay at the say rate as Xbox Series X and be $599 Canadian.

  5. Lets go! The showcase was amazing and I’m so glad that we got a price. I’m really excited for Miles Morales, God of War and Godfall, can’t wait for preorders to go up! Good luck getting your hands on one everybody, wishing everyone luck.
