Sneak peak at the PS5’s user experience
With under a month to go before launch, PlayStation has given fans what they have been asking for, a look at the console’s user experience. Today, PlayStation posted an 11-minute video, below, showing what the user experience will look like and some of the new features.
One of the first features you will see is the Control Center. By pressing the PlayStation button on the DualSense controller, you get immediate access to almost everything you need from the system without leaving the game. Games now feature Activities, which are represented by cards in the Control Center and allow you see things you missed in a game, go directly into levels or challenges and more. Some activities feature video hints that allow you to watch in a picture-in-picture mode while you play.
Take a look at the video below and see these features and more in action on PlayStation 5.
Updated details on backwards compatibility
Sony has revealed that over 99% of the 4,000 PS4 games will be playable on PS5 as of the console launch. In fact, there are only 10 games that are currently not backwards compatible. In fact, Sony has stated that games that are only playable on PS4 will be listed in the PlayStation Store as “PS4 only”.
All of your PS4 games that have been purchased digitally, will be available for download on PlayStation 5. On the other hand, physical PS4 games must be inserted into the disc drive of your PS5 and it will be downloaded onto your PS5. Just like on PS4, every time you want to play the game, you will have to insert the disc into the drive to play.
Additionally, certain PS4 games will benefit from the PS5’s power with faster load times and more stable frame rates. And, some games that have unlocked frame rates or dynamic resolution up to 4K may run even better.
Transferring PS4 digital games and game saves to PlayStation 5
Sony further outlined the process of transferring digital games, game data and game saves from your PS4 to your PS5. This is done by using an ethernet cable or by connecting with WiFi. And, PS Plus members can sync PS4 game saves onto PS5 through cloud storage.
It’s important to note that if you have games or game data on an external USB drive, you can bring them over to your PS5 with that drive. Finally, Sony noted that the ability to transfer game saves between the PS4 version of a game and the PS5 version is up to each developer.

PS4 peripherals & accessories backwards compatibility
Many have been wondering about what existing PS4 peripherals and accessories will work on PS5. In early August, Sony made an official announcement regarding compatibility. However, the biggest bit of news out of the announcement was that DualShock 4 controllers can only be used to play PS4 games.
- Speciality peripherals, such as officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks, will work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games.
- The Platinum and Gold Wireless Headsets, as well as third-party headsets that connect via USB port or audio jack, will work on PS5 (the headset companion app is not compatible with PS5).
- The DualShock 4 wireless controller and PlayStation officially licensed third-party gamepad controllers will work with supported PS4 games.
- Both the PS Move Motion Controllers and the PlayStation VR Aim Controller will work with supported PS VR games on PS5.
- The PlayStation Camera will work with PS5 for playing supported PS VR games. It will require an adaptor that Sony will provide at no additional cost to PS VR users. Details on how to get the adaptor will be announced later.
