Top 3 Nintendo Switch games for 2021

Nintendo has the ability to create timeless game experiences month after month, and year after year. 2021 was no exception. Nintendo released some of its best-selling titles to date. For a company that has not seemed to falter since the Nintendo Switch launched, it’s still incredible that so many great titles can come from one publisher. While there were many to choose from, here is my list of the Top 3 Nintendo Switch games for 2021.

Metroid Dread

Platform: Nintendo Switch
Developer: MercurySteam, Nintendo EPD
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: Action-adventure
Modes: Single player
ESRB Rating: T (Teen)

Launching alongside the Nintendo Switch OLED modelMetroid Dread is the first 2D Metroid game in 19 years! It was a surprise announcement back in June during E3 2021 and was one of the biggest announcements at E3. Now, several months later, Metroid Dread has launched and it is easily my favourite Nintendo Switch game of 2021. What makes this one of the Top 3 Nintendo Switch games for 2021 is its story and gameplay.

The game’s story begins when the Galactic Federation receives a video that a dangerous parasite, thought to be extinct, still exists on the remote planet of ZDR. Research robots are sent to ZDR to investigate, however, soon after reaching the planet, all contact is lost. Samus is sent to investigate and crash lands on the planet. She must now escape the depths of ZDR and return to her ship.

The game contains the same great 2D Metroid gameplay that fans love but adds new elements such as stealth. You must claw your way up from the depths of ZDR using stealth to make your way past the virtually indestructible EMMI robots. As an added bonus, Metroid Dread runs at 60 FPS, in addition the environments are crisp looking and well-animated. As a fan of the Metroid series, especially the 2D side-scrolling games, the 19 year wait was worth it!

Mario Party Superstars

Platform: Nintendo Switch
Developer: ndCube, Nintendo
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: Party
Modes: Single player, Multiplayer
ESRB Rating: E (Everyone)

Mario Party Superstars features 100 mini-games taken from previous entries in the series, and 5 boards from the Nintendo 64 era of Mario Party titles. While a few fan favourite boards might not make an appearance, the five selected are pretty beloved by Mario Party fans as a whole.

All the courses in Mario Party Superstars are looped, like traditional board games. Also gone are mini-games requiring motion control. This comes as a great relief to Nintendo Switch Lite players, who for other games in the series required Joy-Con purchases to play the game. One of the best features in Mario Party Superstars is that all 100 mini-games are instantly accessible from Mt. Minigames. And you can play those mini-games in brand new ways, both locally and online.

Mario Party Superstars is the ultimate version of this classic board game adventure. It has some of the best mini-games in the entire series. And, although some fan favourite boards likely did not make their way into this collection, the boards that were chosen are still unanimously seen as some of the best.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Platform: Nintendo Switch
Developer: ICLA
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: Adventure, Role-Playing
Modes: Single player
ESRB Rating: E (Everyone)

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl are true remasters of the original Nintendo DS adventures, with overhauled graphics, audio, and more. This is not just a new coat of paint on a classic experience. The games take place in the Sinnoh region, one of the more diverse regions in any Pokémon title.

With high mountains, grassy fields, and shivering snowy expanses, you trek across the region, collecting Pokémon, filling out your Pokédex, and battling with Team Galactic. A brand-new art style makes the entire world in these games feel fresh and new. There is considerable new content that has been added to both of these games compared to their Nintendo DS counterparts.

Hidden moves now longer require specific Pokémon, the Grand Underground has been expanded, Super Contest Shows allow you to customize your Pokéballs and more! Both games keep true to the originals in many ways and adds enough new content to make these games worthy purchases.

  1. I am really interested in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. It’s not really my style of game, but I want to play it for the story elements that will tie into Breath of the Wild!

There are some other 3rd party games coming out for this holiday season too, I’m really looking forward to Immortals Fenyx Rising. I just hope that the Switch port doesn’t have to lose too much from the other versions of the game.

I’m sure that Pikmin 3 will do well this holiday, and Animal Crossing has been going crazy all year. I’m sure that many new Switch adopters will be looking to add that to their game library.

Thanks for the list Jon, it looks like it will be a good holiday for the Switch!
