Nintendo has the ability to create timeless game experiences month after month, and year after year. 2020 was no exception. Despite a slow start to the year, Nintendo released some of their best selling titles to date. For a company that has not seemed to falter since the Nintendo Switch launched, it’s still incredible that so many great titles can come from one publisher. While there were many to choose from, here is my list of Nintendo Switch games for the holidays.

Nintendo Switch gamesPikmin 3 Deluxe

Platform: Nintendo Switch
Developer: Nintendo
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: Adventure, Action, Strategy, Multiplayer
Modes: Single player, Multiplayer
ESRB Rating: E10+ (Everyone 10+)

Pikmin 3 was originally released on the Nintendo Wii U in 2013. Like so many other Wii U titles, Pikmin is getting a second wind on Nintendo Switch with a deluxe version that includes tons of additional, never before available content.

Players will control various Pikmin via three different captains, as opposed to the single captain used in Pikmin 1 and Pikmin 2. Different types of Pikmin will have varying abilities, but they all serve one common goal: to overcome obstacles, defeat enemies, and collect food for their homeland. Pikmin 3 Deluxe provides different difficulty level settings, and aims to be accessible to all players, regardless of their skill level. Controlling three different groups of Pikmin at once can be challenging, and getting everyone home safe is imperative. But each moment in Pikmin 3 builds on the last, creating an excellent experience, and one of my favourite Nintendo Switch games this year.

In addition to the content available from the Wii U version, Pikmin 3 Deluxe includes local cooperative play, additional side missions, a competitive mode, and much more.

Nintendo Switch gamesHyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity

Platform: Nintendo Switch
Developer: Omega Force
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: Adventure, Action, Fighting
Modes: Single player, Multiplayer
ESRB Rating: T (Teen)

The original Hyrule Warriors was a big hit on both the Nintendo Wii U and the Nintendo Switch. Omega Force has once again partnered with Nintendo to create another game in this new Zelda series, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. Rather then make a sequel, the development team has instead chosen to set the game 100 years prior to the events of one of the best Nintendo Switch games, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

The timeline is not the only thing being borrowed from Breath of the Wild, however. Fans of that epic adventure will find many similarities in Age of Calamity, including familiar enemies and locations, all designed in the same art style.

Of course, the familiar Dynasty Warriors gameplay will still be present, and fighting through hordes of enemies and completing various quests will be enjoyable as ever. Age of Calamity is going to provide lots of context to the Breath of the Wild timeline, and will be a great title to play leading into the upcoming launch of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2.

  1. I am really interested in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. It’s not really my style of game, but I want to play it for the story elements that will tie into Breath of the Wild!

There are some other 3rd party games coming out for this holiday season too, I’m really looking forward to Immortals Fenyx Rising. I just hope that the Switch port doesn’t have to lose too much from the other versions of the game.

I’m sure that Pikmin 3 will do well this holiday, and Animal Crossing has been going crazy all year. I’m sure that many new Switch adopters will be looking to add that to their game library.

Thanks for the list Jon, it looks like it will be a good holiday for the Switch!
