DC’s Justice League: Cosmic Chaos Review

There are a lot of companies getting licenses for big intellectual properties like Marvel and DC. Often, these companies are churning out mediocre products that they hope will sell anyway. It seems that a strong intellectual property is an excuse to release sub-par products. Despite the strength of Outright Games title, when I heard they were releasing an action-adventure game in the DC universe, I was pretty skeptical. Somehow, I think Outright Games has flipped the script with DC’s Justice League: Cosmic Chaos!

I’ve been playing this title for a good long while now, and have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the game. Still, will my positive experience mean you will also have a positive experience? Let’s take a look at DC’s Justice League: Cosmic Chaos and what it has to offer players!

An epic Justice League tale

In this hilariously written and well voiced tale, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman must work together to defy the antics of Mister Mxyzptlk. Mxyzptlk has created chaos in the world, unleashing hordes of enemies and capturing multiple heroes. Through mind tricks, this villain turns the local residents against the superheroes by putting the heroes in situations that make them look bad.

As the superheroes work together, they will unlock new abilities, improve their home base, and even recruit new heroes to their cause. Along the way, players will dive into the side stories of these heroes. Through multiple missions – both mainline and secondary – players will slowly, but surely, take back the city and rescue the hurting citizens.

Wonderfully illustrated and voice

As we said off the top, licensed products sometimes come out a bit lackluster. Superheroes sell themselves, after all, so how much work did Outright Games and PHL Collective really need to do. The answer is probably not a lot, but they did anyway, and it shows. Very few games aimed at kids and families have produced a lasting impression, but after beating Cosmic Chaos I can say it has here.

The phenomenal art and special effects make the entire game pop. There were few moments throughout my dozen plus hours of playing where I felt the development team had taken shortcuts. Matching the great art is the voice acting, which is phenomenally done. The key voices behind Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman return from previous DC properties. Nolan North, Diedrich Bader, and Vanessa Marshall all do a phenomenal job, and really bring the story to life.

Fantastic, fast action

You can only put so much paint on a bad game. At some point, poor mechanics will shine through and the entire experience crumbles. Again, PHL Collective have gone the extra mile to make the game not only look great, but play great as well.

As with any action-adventure title, there are a ton of combos to master. On harder difficulties, these combos matter a lot more, but the easier you set the game, the more you can just mash to your heart’s content. I love that about this title. For those looking for a deeper combat experience, it is here. For those who just want to enjoy a great story, they can as well. The accessibility in this game is fantastic, which means even my 10 year old can grab a controller and enjoy.

Swapping between your three main heroes is really simple and quick. You’ll want to do this often as each has unique special abilities that can turn the tide of battle. You can also level up all your skills, so keeping your heroes rotating is a good idea for experience. You can also recruit and use other heroes, who can pop in to help during a fight.

There is light puzzling throughout the adventure as well, although nothing too intense. Generally these puzzles revolve around hitting specific switches, or finding a specific item in order to move forward. It’s never overly difficult, and while I paused once or twice to really think, most came pretty naturally.

DC’s Justice League: Cosmic Chaos is a great, wholesome family experience

DC’s Justice League: Cosmic Chaos does offer couch cooperative play. With couch cooperative play being so rare in today’s video game space, it’s fantastic to see it included here. I spent so much time running around this world with my kids, and they enjoyed it just as much as I did. There is a lot going on so playing on smaller screen is a bit difficult. However, on larger TVs, the experience is fantastic, and quickly became my desired way to play.

Overall, DC’s Justice League: Cosmic Chaos is a great, family friendly adventure. While there is some mild cartoon violence, it’s a safe place for kids to enjoy the DC universe. Outright Games continues to publish great titles for all ages, and they’ve partnered with PHL Collective to really take their games to the next level. If you are looking for a great action-adventure title, this might be one for you.
