What’s New in Call of Duty Black Ops 4
Today developer Treyarch revealed the first details about the much anticipated Call of Duty Black Ops 4. Claiming that this will be the “most replayable” Black Ops title ever, they dished out the specifics on a number of new features. Not to mention a new mode likened to—you guessed it—”battle royale”.
First off, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 will be the first in the series not to feature a story campaign. Instead, narratives will be woven through each of the three core types of gameplay. These are Multiplayer, Zombies, and the aforementioned battle royale mode dubbed “Blackout “.
Multiplayer Madness
According to Treyarch, the biggest improvements to multiplayer gameplay in Call of Duty Black Ops 4 will revolve around weapons and health. They boast “more improvements to the gun system than Black Ops 1 through 3 combined“. With unique attachments which are not shared across individual weapons, each gun is said to be a character within itself.
Call of Duty Black Ops 4 is also the first in the series with “true recoil adjustment”. Each weapon will feature its own unique, accurate recoil physics. The path to mastery will lie in learning the subtle nuances of each firearm.
Health has also been altered significantly from previous titles in the series. Healing is no longer automatic, but must rather be triggered manually by the player. This should provide greater depth to gameplay when it comes to tactical strategy. Players will have to weigh the benefits of an aggressive play style versus a tactical health-conscious approach.
Here there be ZombiesÂ
For Call of Duty Black Ops 4 the fan-favourite Zombies mode will receive three full storylines/maps at launch. The narrative will follow a crew of four as they take on an “ancient order with a nefarious agenda”. Battles will occur across multiple settings such as the Titanic and ancient Rome.
Zombies will also feature an “Evergreen Mode”, with a full set of tools which will allow players to create their own Zombies scenarios with customized rules and systems. This feature comes complete with unique codes documenting player performance under these custom conditions. These codes make for reliable, cheat-free tracking across third-party competition sites.
Get ready to Blackout
Finally, Treyarch has confirmed what we’ve likely all been speculating about. Call of Duty Black Ops 4 will have a battle royale-esque mode. “Blackout” will contain characters, weapons, and pieces of maps from across the entire near-ten year history of the franchise.
Treyarch describes the map for Blackout mode as “1500 times bigger than [the perennial favourite map] Nuketown”. Combat will also feature land, sea, and air vehicles. Treyarch promises that the familiar battle royale-style of gameplay will be done in a completely original way, such that “only the Black Ops series” can do it.
Boots on the Ground
Amid cheers from an appreciative crowd, Treyarch also confirmed that Call of Duty Black Ops 4 would not feature thrust jumps or wall running. Instead, they promise a realistic experience with tight, refined controls and fluid “guns up” action.
Call of Duty Black Ops 4 releases on October 12th, 2018.
