Some movies make you cry. Some inspire you to want to change the world. Some spark your imagination with tales of galaxies far away. Then there are movies like Uncle Drew that entertain with a great story, belly-laugh worthy scenes, and familiar actors that we can’t help but cheer on to victory. Uncle Drew opens in theatres June 29th, 2018.

Uncle Drew goes for a slam dunk at the cinema

When is the last time you went to the theatre for a great feel-good, fun-filled, entertaining comedy? For me it has to be over a year—perhaps much longer. Let Uncle Drew change that! The story is fresh. The faces of the actors are familiar, but in a “butcher on the bus” kind of way. I’m sure you’ve experience that feeling when you see someone (perhaps on a bus), and for a few minutes you think you know them, but don’t know from where, then suddenly it hits you: that’s the cashier you see all the time at the grocery store, or the butcher, or the mailman …. That realization makes us happy. You’ll get that over and over in Uncle Drew. Most importantly, you will laugh—forget your worries, de-stress, and enjoy!

The Pepsi commercial series about Uncle Drew came first and was a huge success. For the past 5 years the “Uncle Drew” digital episodes staring NBA star Kylie Irving, as an “O.G.,” a man over 60 years old, who teaches the young guys a thing or two about basketball, have been a fan-favourite. Taking this endearing character to the big screen was only a matter of time. Here is the official movie trailer for Uncle Drew (the originals are all available online if you want to see them):

Uncle Drew is even better with his crew

Uncle Drew, the character, is able to assemble a talented crew of teammates because Uncle Drew, the movie, has an amazingly talented cast. Joining the versatile and imaginative Kylie Irving are some of the greatest players in the history of the basketball. There is Shaquille O’Neal, a true legend of the NBA. There is also one of my personal favourites, Reggie Miller. There is also three-time WNBA MVP and four-time Olympic gold medal winner Lisa Leslie! The cast is full of top talent that basketball fans would recognize immediately on the court.

However, in a movie, disguised to look older, the cast is sure to elicit a strong feeling of familiarity (aka “butcher on the bus” feeling), adding to the effectiveness of the script. You know what’s coming, but when it happens you’ll be so caught in the story it is sure to be hilarious and a lot of fun.

  49. My favourite basketball player that is a star in this film has to be Kyrie Irving! (Uncle Drew) not to mention I’m a big fan of Tiffany Haddish as well! The nearest city nearest to me is Toronto!
