When I was a kid, there was nothing worse than receiving boring old clothes or personal grooming items for gifts at Christmas. Bah, humbug! Although I don’t yet have kids myself, I doubt that they’ve changed all that much over the years, meaning I’m betting that kids still want fun gifts for Christmas as opposed to the basic necessities of life. If finding the perfect fun gift is a challenge for you each year, just keep on reading today’s (hopefully) helpful article as we suggest several seriously fun gifts for boys, girls, and children of all ages!

Fun Gifts for Kids

LEGO & Building Blocks

If you ever had the pleasure of playing with LEGO and (similar) Building Blocks when you were growing up, then you know just how much fun it can be. I remember receiving a LEGO police station once as a kid, and I played with that thing for hours on end, and over a period of several months as well (if not years). And that’s just the thing about LEGO—it captures the imagination as it challenges the creativity. What kid doesn’t love LEGO?

Shown above is the LEGO Jurassic World: Indoraptor Rampage at Lockwood Estate set, featuring 1019 LEGO pieces and endless possibilities. Among the goodies you’ll receive are mini LEGO figures of major characters like Owen and Claire, as well as other characters like Mills, Maisie, Wheatley, and Eversol. And then there are the dinosaurs (the Indoraptor itself along with a baby Velociraptor) and the impressive 3-level Lockwood Estate (featuring a bedroom, an office, a laboratory, and even a collapsible roof).

Have fun recreating the thrilling end sequence from the recent Jurassic World 2 film, or simply build and rebuild the estate in your own creative way over and over again. Either way, you’re sure to have a great time with this very cool LEGO set. I mean your child will. (No I didn’t.)

Video Games

Shown above is the Xbox One X 1TB Console

I speak from experience when I say that kids love Video Games. Of course, today’s video games are far more advanced and hold much more variety (in terms of gaming options) than anything from my day. The major systems include PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo, not to mention PC Gaming and even Virtual Reality.

With so many options out there, it’s bound to be confusing if you haven’t kept up with the industry in recent years. For this reason I would highly suggest a bit of study right here on the Best Buy Canada Blog, where numerous video game articles and reviews are posted every month. You’ll be able to learn things like what games and systems are popular today, and which games are age appropriate for kids (as many these days are adult themed).

I must be honest—I have not kept up with gaming in recent times, and I wouldn’t know where to begin when it comes to recommending a specific game or console. However, as it turns out, Retro Gaming is currently undergoing a major resurgence, so I could definitely get into a good old fashioned game of Donkey Kong or Super Mario Bros!

STEM Toys & Robotics

Just because a toy is educational doesn’t mean that it can’t also be fun. And what better example than some of the STEM toys and robotics kits that are currently so popular among today’s future engineers? And speaking of robotics, what cooler example could we give than the Sphero Star Wars R2-D2 App-Enabled Droid?

This droid features realistic lights and sounds, will watch the Star Wars movies with you and react to what is happening (especially to his own character), and even interacts with other Sphero Star Wars droids like BB-8. There’s no doubt about it, this is the droid you’re looking for!

Of course, if the educational stuff appeals to your little one more-so than the Star Wars stuff, you can always go with the Sphero SPRK+ Robotic Ball. With the ability to teach your child programming and other key STEM principles, this ball is a great way to encourage any future engineer or scientist!

Power Wheels & Powered Ride On Toys

Pictured here is the Power Wheels Deluxe Jeep Wrangler for kids ages 3 and up

For kids in the 3-7 age range (or thereabouts), what could be more fun than a Power Wheels or Powered Ride On Vehicle? These realistic looking cars, trucks, and motorcycles legitimately drive, so little ones can feel like they’re truly behind the wheel. The best models have features like forward and reverse throttle, realistic braking, working headlights, real seatbelts, and even radios that play music.

The leading brand in the industry is Power Wheels, and their vehicles offer durable plastic construction, opening and closing doors, a maximum weight capacity in the range of 130 pounds (with room for up to 2 riders), and sometimes even an external remote control to give parents the ability to override their child’s maneuvering of the vehicle (just in case you have a little speedster on your hands).

These kinds of vehicles have come an awful long way since I was a kid. My only regret is they don’t make them big enough to hold me!

Arts & Crafts

Finally, if your child is the artistic type, you might consider a gift in the Arts & Crafts realm, of which Best Buy has much to offer. Consider, for instance, the KidKraft Deluxe Wooden Easel (in Espresso), which features a double-sided design (with a chalkboard on one side and dry-erase board on the other), a paper roll that mounts to (and unrolls from) the top of the easel, and various places to store a variety of art supplies (like paint, crayons, markers, and chalk). Also included are 2 sealable (and spill-proof) paint cups which will help your little artist to maintain some semblance of organization as they have fun creating amazing works of art. I can only imagine the fun I would have had with one of these when I was little, because I just loved to draw. I’m sure that the modern child artist will have an absolute blast with it as well!

And there you have it—an abundance of great gift suggestions for kids who love to have fun! Now all you have to do is pick something out. Have fun!
