A number of different factors can affect the quality of one’s sleep. If you’re like most people, you probably sleep well enough most nights, but overall could use a more consistently restful slumber. To help improve the overall quality and consistency of your sleep, the focus of today’s blog is Smart Home Sleep Technology and other useful products that combine to contribute to a great night’s sleep. This list includes items that can help to enhance your sleep’s restfulness both directly (aiding in the sleep itself) and indirectly (by giving you peace of mind while you snooze).
Smart home sleep technology
Getting a good night’s sleep comes easier to some than others. If you’re one of the folks that could use a little bit of extra help getting your zees in, one piece of smart home technology that might help you out is the Dodow Metronome Sleep Aid Device. What this device is is a light casting system that shines a rhythmic light pattern on your bedroom ceiling that helps you to relax, regulate your breathing pattern, and ultimately fall asleep in 8-20 minutes, after which time it automatically shuts itself off. I actually reviewed this device when it first came out, so I’ll let that review fill you in on the rest of the details.
Another smart product that could help you to sleep better is the Withings Sleep Tracking Pad with Sensor, Sleep Score, & IFTTT Integration. This Alexa compatible device slips under your mattress and then tracks various sleep quality metrics, such as your heart rate, sleep cycles, breathing, and snoring. Using this feedback, the pad can then affect control over other smart home products to achieve ideal sleeping conditions in your bedroom. For instance, it can change the temperature or the amount of light in the room to help improve your quality of sleep. In fact, this product has a whole host of really useful features that could help to improve your sleep. My favourite is the way it combines all of your collected sleeping data to give you a daily sleep score, thus informing you of the restful quality of your sleep and giving you a goal to try and beat the next night.
One of the more interesting sleep tech products I’ve become aware of recently is the Somnox Sleep Robot 1.0 with Breathing Regulation. This huggable bean-shaped robot somewhat reminds me of a teddy bear, but it’s actually a whole lot more than that. What it does is simulate the rhythmic inhalation and exhalation of your breathing (via its breathing sensors) to help you relax and make you fall asleep more quickly (as well as to sleep longer once you do). It’s also Bluetooth enabled and works with a special app (both iOS and Android smart phone compatible), so you can customize and control its features, like setting timers and managing your breathing rhythms. I haven’t had occasion to try one of these out myself yet, but it sure does sound promising.And then there’s the Hupnos Anti-Snoring Sleep Mask, which promises to monitor your snoring and gently nudge you into a better sleeping position through tiny vibrations that encourage you to reposition yourself through the night. It also offers EPAP (Expiratory Positive Airway Pressure) to help adjust your breathing by better opening your airways, and a special app tracks your sleep performance so you can try to improve over time and get a higher quality of sleep. I don’t know exactly how well this EPAP thing might work, but I would really like to give it a try myself as I often have breathing difficulty at night.
Before we move on to smart home products that will help you to sleep with peace of mind, the final purely sleep tech product I want to mention is the iHome Zenergy Meditative Therapy Candle. This candle has 4 Light Therapy programs (including Favourite Colour and Flame-Effect) and 8 soothing sounds to help you fall asleep—everything from Thunder Storm to Calming Ocean, and even White Noise. One of the sound options, Breathing Coach, has an optional voice guidance feature to help get your breathing into a soothing rhythm that will help you fall asleep. Sleeping with peace of mind
