Airthings Wave radon detector reviewNovember is Radon action month. Did you know that radon gas that seeps up from radioactive elements deep underground can collect in your home? You can’t smell it, taste it, or see it either. And radon is deadly, leading to more cases of lung cancer than any other cause for non-smokers. To help raise awareness of the dangers of radon, Best Buy is giving away 2 sets of Airthings monitors in this contest.

How can you be sure the air in your home is safe?

Your home is your sanctuary, a place you relax and unwind, enjoying time with your family. The last thing you need is a silent, odourless, invisible pest; and there is no nastier pest than radon gas. In Canada alone, over 3000 people die each year due to illnesses caused by radon (takeactiononradon.ca). That’s more than from car accidents!

Radon gas is a naturally occurring product of radioactive elements in the soil. It gets into our homes from the ground, and since it is heavier than air, it can collect in our homes and concentrate to hazardous levels. You can act to reduce it if you know it’s a problem in your home. Airthings smart monitors can measure the radon levels continuously and send those reading right to an app on your phone. In addition, the newest Airthings Wave Plus can measure radon, CO2, and other harmful substances for added protection (One of the prizes for this contest includes a Wave Plus!).

Radon levels are different all over the country

Last year, I sent one Airthings Wave monitor to writers across the country; the readings were then published in a review by Brad Moon on our blog. As you can see from the graph (reproduced here), radon levels vary a lot from place to place.

Best Buy has many kinds of smart technology designed to make your home safer. There are smart cameras, smart lights, smart sensors, and more. Using a monitor designed to detect radon is one way to keep your home safe. And, since placement is so important, you might need more than one if your home has multiple levels. That’s why we are giving each winner of this contest two monitors: so the air you breathe in your home can be safer.

How to enter

Entering is easy, but you can only enter once. First look at the smart home section of Best Buy’s website, then tell us another product (besides Airthings radon monitors) that you think would increase the safety of your home.

What you can win

At the end of this contest, we will select two (2) winners from all eligible entries. One person will win an Airthings Wave Plus and an Airthings Wave, the other person will receive an Airthings Wave and an Airthings Corentium Radon Gas Monitor.

This contest runs from November 28th to December 12th.

Remember, you can only enter once, but tell your family about the risks posed by radon gas so they too can act to protect their home.

  3. I’ve always thought about getting cameras for my house. My neighbour across the street had their front door kicked in well they were away about 8 months back. Since then I’ve been worried and been thinking of upgrading security around my home.

  4. Some Nanoleaf smart lights would make it look like there’s someone home while I’m out and look really good too.

  5. I am so glad that Best Buys knows what we all could use around our house. Living in a 95 year old house (yes – that is true). I sure could use that Honey Wireless Leak and Freeze Detector. I am also very excited about the Airthings Wave and the Airthings Corentium Radon Gas Monitor – that is also another very important tool to have especially when one lives in an ‘antique house” – like I do. I just love all of your giveaways. Thank you.

  6. I think an August smart lock would be awesome, can’t think how many times I forgot my keys in the car and had to walk back outside in the cold to get them hahaha

  7. I live in a home that could really benefit from the Honeywell Wireless Leak and Freeze Detector. I’m always nervous about cracks and leaks that I can’t always see.

  8. I think the Honeywell Wireless Leak & Freeze Detector to monitor leaks on water heater that Best Buy sells Is an important detector to have for safety in the home from water leaks and water damage. Keep bugging my husband about getting one for our home!

  9. A smart lock and the Ring Wi-Fi Video Doorbell Pro – Bilingual would be great security additions to our home.

  10. I definitely think the Arlo Pro Wire-Free Security System with 6 HD Cameras would increase the safety of my home from unwanted “visitors”.
