With the chicklette kCZ for iPad - Multiscreeneyboard and small form factor, the CZ-101 was not something that filled out the A-frame keyboard stands of the ’80s. The later introduction of the CZ-1 (bigger form-factor evolution of the CZ-101) fixed that issue, but the CZ-101, much like the Roland TR-808 has remained a great source of inspiration for many electronic musicians.

Casio has released the CZ App for iPad is intuitive, has loads of functions and seems to just invite you to play around with it. In fact, they’ve incorporated a dual-play mode where two keyboards pop up and you can jam with someone else on the same iPad.

The CZ App features a built-in 4-part PD (phase distortion) sound source. Its 36 waveforms are capable of generating an extensive and diverse range of sounds. The created tones can also be played on MIDI-compatible instruments.

  1. The portability of the CZ-101 on an i-pad makes it an ideal instrument for learning.  The blog post was short and left me wanting more.  I’m sure it would be a great tool for creating and sharing music.
