Spookiest games

It’s that time of year again—the leaves are falling, the days are getting shorter, and soon Halloween will be upon us. October is the month for everything creepy, crawly, dark and stormy, and it’s a great opportunity to immerse yourself in eerie movies, books, and of course video games! Here are a few of the spookiest games we recommend for this Halloween.

Spookiest gamesEvil Dead The Game

Platform(s): PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch (later this year)
Publisher(s): Boss Team Games
Genre: Survival horror
Modes: Single-player, multiplayer
ESRB Rating: M (Mature 17+)

Saber Interactive and Boss Team Games team up to bring the iconic Evil Dead universe together into an over-the-top video game experience starring the boomstick-brandishing, chainsaw-wielding horror hero Ashley J. Williams in Evil Dead The Game.

Playing as the survivors, teams of four work together completing various objectives along the way. First, secure three map pieces, each at different locations on the map. Next, make your way to various ritual sites. Secure the Kandarian Dagger and the lost Necronomicon pages, whose locations appear on the map. You must hold out for a certain amount of time before either the dagger or pages are secured—all while facing an onslaught of enemies.

Next, you and your team must banish a group of powerful entities from the world. Finally, the key to victory lies in the final stand-off during which you must defend the Necronomicon as it’s sealed away. Evil Dead The Game isn’t just multiplayer, there is a single player component included as well. These five mission’s content and five bonus extracts to unlock lean heavily on the TV series and movies from the Evil Dead universe.

Dying Light 2 Stay Human

Platform(s): PS5, PS4Xbox Series X|SXbox One and PC
Publisher(s): Techland
Genre: Action role-playing, survival horror
Modes: Single-player, multiplayer (2-4 players co-op)
ESRB Rating: M (Mature 17+)

Dying Light 2 Stay Human is a story-driven open-world action role playing game. The year is 2036, 15 years after the Fall and much of the world’s population has been wiped out. Now, all that remains are a handful of scattered human settlements, with the walled fictional European city of Villedor. The city has been spared the worst of the pandemic and has become one of humankind’s last strongholds.

However, control of Villedor is split between several factions, including the militaristic Peacekeepers, the independent Survivors, and the violent Renegades. There are three classes for enemies: virals, biters and degenerates. Virals are the first stage of infection, they are quick, dangerous animalistic humanoids that are filled with primal rage. Next, biters are slow in the day time and the second stage of infection. Finally, there are degenerates, which are the last stage and are essentially decaying body bags.

While this game does have survival horror elements to it, it also has horde fighting and creative zombie slaying superhero-like combat. UV lights guarantee safety at night too and this is a great time to play around with load outs. You aren’t just waiting for morning though. The resting place in the safe zone allows players to change the day and night cycle and provides a Stash for Aiden to leave extras he won’t need on his journey. There’s also Windmills, Faction Structures, and Facilities to activate. It’s easy to see why this game is one of the spookiest games this season.

The game’s central protagonist is a mysterious mother figure known as Mother Miranda. Strangely enough, the villagers have put their trust in her to protect them. Little Nightmares II

Platform(s): PlayStation 4Nintendo SwitchXbox OneStadia and PC
Publisher(s): Bandai Namco Entertainment
Genre: Puzzle-platformer
Modes: Single-player
ESRB Rating: T (Teen)

Quite possibly one of the most spookiest games out there, Little Nightmares II‘s story is centred around Mono, a young boy who wakes up trapped in a distorted world by the humming transmission of a distant Signal Tower. Together with Six, the main character from the first game, they set out to discover the secrets of the Signal Tower while trying to escape the monsters who are out to capture you. Much like in Little Nightmares, the story in Little Nightmares II is up to what you make of the world, your encounters and the events that unfold throughout the game.

The art direction in Little Nightmares II is incredible and totally unique. It’s gloomy and darkly whimsical, exactly how you’d picture a young child’s worst nightmare. Enhancing the grim mood is a spooky soundtrack that instantly sent shivers down my spine. Sounds are often ambient, like rickety boat creaks and unsettling gushes of heavy wind or rain. However, during encounters with the grotesque denizens the tension gets ratcheted up several notches.

If you’re not a fan of horror games, you don’t have to worry with Little Nightmares II. The game isn’t scary per say and there aren’t any jump scares. It’s more creepy looking and feeling than it is scary. Although, that’s not to say that the chase sequences won’t have your heart pounding.

  1. Plants vs Zombies is my favorite series, and and I look forward to play Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville. And the whole selection is great! All games are worth being in the list

  2. I can’t say I’m a big horror fan, but there are a few new spooky games this month that I’m interested in. Definitely Luigi’s Mansion, and I’m also interested in seeing MediEvil despite not owning a PS4.

    Thanks for the list!
