A world destroyed by nuclear war

If you are playing Fallout 4 for the first time, let’s take a few minutes to talk about the story. It’s set 200 years after the initial nuclear war, which the Fallout games are set after. You play as a protagonist who leaves the safety of Vault 111 in search of your kidnapped infant son.

As you emerge into the wasteland of the Boston Commonwealth, you discover that much has changed in the 200 years since the bombs fell. Every second is a fight for survival, and every choice is yours. From the first few minutes playing, you quickly realize that it is you, and only you, who can rebuild and determine the fate of the Wasteland.

Fallout 4

Freedom and Liberty

Fallout 4: Game of the Year Edition maintains many of same features of the previous two games in the series. You have a vast wasteland to explore, companions to find and have follow you, tons of items and weapons to find, irradiated ghouls, super mutants, raiders and the list goes on. If you have played previous games in the series, you’ll notice right away that the overall shooting of the game has been vastly improved. It now feels much more fluid and responsive, and in many cases more like the shooting in modern day shooters.

The game still uses the SPECIAL system from previous games to determine your overall attributes. However, the skills of the previous games have been replaced with a perk system. As you level up, you will be granted a perk point each level, which depending on your attributes, will allow you to place it in a certain perk, granting you one rank in that chosen perk.

Fallout 4

The previous crafting system has been expanded on and finally makes use of all that junk you used to collect. Now junk can be broken down into smaller components like screws, metals, springs, gears and so on. All of these components can be used to create weapon mods, explosives, drugs, armour and more when you use a specific crafting bench and have the specific perk needed to craft the specific item or modification.

A whole lot of additional content is included

In addition to the original full game, Fallout 4: Game of the Year Edition includes all of the official add-ons. Let’s take a look at each one below.

Nuka-World

Nuka-World is a vast amusement park that is now a lawless city of Raiders. You will explore an open wasteland and park zones like Safari Adventure, Dry Rock Gulch, Kiddie Kingdom, and the Galactic Zone. You must lead lethal gangs of Raiders and use them to conquer settlements.

This add-on features new quests, Raiders, weapons, creatures, and more. It is recommended that you are at level 30 before playing this add-on.

Fallout 4

Vault-Tec Workshop

Vault-Tec Workshop is an add-on that offers some scripted content and the ability to build your own shelter. This is by far my favourite add-on in the Workshop series. It’s been a long time since I dreamed of building my own shelter!

Despite the relative ease with which you can build our shelter, the game gives you many different options to build the ultimate shelter of your dreams.

Fallout 4

Contraptions Workshop

The Contraptions Workshop allows you to use conveyor belts, scaffolding kits, track kits, even logic gates to construct crazy and complex gadgets to improve your Wasteland settlements. Included in this add-on are a whole new set of features like elevators, greenhouse kits, warehouse kits, fireworks, armor racks and more!

Far Harbor

Far Harbor will have you searching for a young woman and a secret colony of synths. You travel off the coast of Maine to the island of Far Harbor, where a much more feral world plagued by high levels of radiation, await. You have to navigate your way through a growing conflict between the Children of Atom, synths and the local townsfolk, in this add-on.

Far Harbor also features the largest landmass ever created for a Bethesda add-on. In addition, it gives you new faction quests, settlements, dungeons, armour, weapons and more lethal creatures to test your wasteland survival skills.

Fallout 4

Wasteland Workshop

The Wasteland Workshop adds a lot of content to the game. You get new items to jazz up your settlements. These include items such as new lighting, concrete dwelling sections, and plus traps and cages for every type creature in wasteland.

With all those traps and cages you can capture and tame any creature in the wasteland. Or, you can build a giant arena and make your settlers battle it out with increasingly bigger and badder creatures. The best part about this add-on is it’s all up to you as to how you use the new features they have added to the settlements.

Fallout 4

Automatron

Automatron features a mysterious Mechanist who has released an army of evil robots on the Boston Commonwealth. It’s up to you to you to hunt them down and salvage their parts to create your own customized robot champions to fight back. There are hundreds of mods to choose from. These allow you to customize their limbs, armour, voices, paint schemes, abilities and weapons.

A colourful post-apocalypse world

Unlike the previous games, Fallout 4’s wasteland is surprisingly colourful and pop. This is thanks in part to the many more varied locations in this game compared. Many of the locations in the game are ruins and shells of them former selves. Though, Fallout 4 somehow seems to make them all a sight to behold.

If you own either a PlayStation 4 Pro or Xbox One X, you’ll see some additional improvements such as higher resolutions and a smoother frame rate.

Final Thoughts

If you have never played Fallout 4, or missed out on all the extra content, Fallout 4: Game of the Year Edition is the perfect chance to jump in. The game offers an unparalleled sense of freedom, excellent gameplay, a well-crafted storyline, and an amazing amount of content.

If you have a sense of adventure and love tinkering with weapons and equipment, Fallout 4: Game of the Year Edition is well worth wandering the wasteland.

+ Massive area to explore

+ Virtually unlimited amount of weapon combinations to try
+ Enhanced visuals and performance on the PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X

– The massive open world might be intimidating for some
