With the Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo Instant Camera, Fujifilm asks photographers to “show how you see the world.” This camera is a step beyond the brand’s other instant cameras, combining classic instant photography with the ability to print shots from a smartphone using Instax technology.
The Mini Evo gives the beholder the ability to customize each photo it takes. It has a generously sized 3″ LCD screen and a shooting sensitivity of ISO 100-1600. Like other instant cameras, the Mini Evo’s focus distance and aperture are fixed. It shoots at a focal distance of 28 mm (equivalent to a classic film 35 mm) and an aperture of F2.0, which gives each photo a gorgeous, creamy effect and vintage feel.
With the Mini Evo, you can capture every shot you want… Exactly as you see it. And then, at the end of the day, you can simply plug in to recharge your camera battery via micro USB.
Digital Fujifilm features with analog design
The Mini Evo is not Fujifilm’s first foray into instant photography with custom filters. Think of these cameras as “analog with a digital twist.” When you take your photo, it’s stored digitally on the camera’s internal memory or on a microSD card, recording up to 2560 x 1920 pixels.
You can view the image on the back of the camera after you capture it, make any adjustments you see fit. Then, you flick a separate “print” lever to instantly print the photo. Like other instant photos, you’ll get the best results by simply leaving the photo face-down to develop for a couple of minutes—no shaking necessary!
How the Instax Mini Evo customizes images
Aside from separating the “capture” and “print” buttons, the Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo also introduces two easy-to-control customizations to use on your photos. This combination of effects gives you 100 different shooting options for each image, and their intuitive controls are easy to use.
Twist the camera’s lens dial to change lens effects, or turn the camera’s film dial to switch film effects. For one final adjustment, choose between “instax-Natural Mode” and “instax-Rich Mode” before printing to toggle between conventional photo prints and extra-vibrant ones.
Lens effects include normal, vignette, soft focus, blur, fisheye, colour shift, light leak, mirror, double exposure, and half-frame. Film effects include normal, vivid, pale, canvas, monochrome, sepia, yellow, red, blue, and retro.
The Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo vs other instant cameras
It isn’t uncommon to be able to filter your digital images before printing them out on an instant camera or instant photo printer. However, no other camera body does so quite this seamlessly.
With the Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo, your controls feel analog—even though they’re digital. You toggle controls on your camera body to rotate through effects, similarly to how you’d change shooting modes on a DSLR. Then, to print, you get to flick a physical printing lever and feel your photo start to emerge from the camera body.
With a lightweight (285 g), vintage-look design, the Mini Evo allows for two-way communication between your smartphone app and instant camera. You can capture and print from this Instax camera, but you can also save your printed images to your smartphone. And, on the other end of things, you can print photos directly from your smartphone.
The Fujivilm Instax Mini Evo also allows photographers to use their smartphone as a remote control for this camera. This is a great way to take instant group photos without leaving anyone out. It’s also perfect for shooting a steady image from a tripod, as the camera includes both an accessory shoe (for things like LED lights and viewfinders) and a tripod mount.
