We’ve been talking spring home remodel projects these past few weeks, with Erin creating a DIY home theatre and Stacey focusing on breathing life into the living room. Once you have those areas looking great, you really do take a good look at the rest of your house and see it with fresh new eyes, and if you’re anything like me, you realize you just can’t stop at a few rooms. You have to keep going and tackle more areas in your house.

I recently put my house up for sale, and before I did I took a good look at every single room in my house and added some spring-time touches to every corner. From fresh new paint to simple touches like a brand new duvet cover, I had a blast bringing life and colour into every room after a long winter inside. It really helped too—my house was only on the market for 8 days before we had an offer and it sold.

When I move into my new home, the first thing I’m going to do is refresh each room and get them ready for warm weather, and thankfully there are so many simple ideas for re-doing every corner of your home that there’s no reason not to dive in and revive every area.

Here are just a few great ways to refresh your house for spring, from simple fixes to big changes:

A crisp, clean bedroom

Let’s face, we all suffer from clutter in the winter. One of my kids told me it’s better to have “stuff” around you in the winter because it keeps the room warmer. I think that was just to get out of cleaning his room, but he certainly hit the nail on the head when it comes to all those winter extras we have like big blankets and heating pads.

Spring is a great time to say goodbye to all of that stuff for a few months, so once you pack it away you’re ready to throw open the windows and bring some sunlight into your bedroom.

Start by choosing a new bedroom furniture set—there’s nothing like pure white to make you think spring, and if you take a look on Pinterest you’ll see that white furniture is the choice for many homeowners who don’t like the look of dark wood in the bedroom. The best thing about buying bedroom furniture in a set is that you get every single piece you need, right down to a mirror to reflect the light shining in from the windows.

Once you have your new furniture set up, choose a new duvet set and new pillows. Just changing up the colours of your bedding can change the entire dynamic of a bedroom, and after a long winter, your pillows will definitely need to be washed or tossed.

Open the doors to the dining room

A dining room is another area that can get stuffy in the winter. I can’t tell you how many friends I have that use their dining room tables as a catch-all for whatever they have in their hands at the moment. From bills to toys, the dining room table is the place to put them.

But if you have a dining room in your home that you’d like to use, spring really is the best time to open up the windows and get back to enjoying a big family meal together around your table.

I recently re-did my dining room, and my remodel started with a fresh coat of paint, new curtains, and a brand new dining room table and chairs. Why a new table when you could just make do with your old one? To start, having a new piece of furniture I really loved forced me to put my daily pile of stuff somewhere else. Plus, I love adding a big bouquet of spring tulips to the table so I can walk into the room and enjoy the feeling of spring.

If you need a suggestion for dining room seating that can really make mealtime fun, I highly recommend adding at least one bench to your table. It’s a great way to seat kids, and it’s nice if you have extra guests. I added one bench to either side of my 7-foot table and a dining chair at either end. It’s more than enough seating for everyone in my big family.

Bring the sunshine into your home office

I love my home office, but after a long winter of staying in, it definitely needed an upgrade. I like to change up the area rug in my home office according to the season, so in the winter I go for dark browns or greys and in the spring I change it to light whites or cream.

The area rug helps change the feel of the room, but this year I took it one step further by changing out the desk too. Office furniture used to be same-old, same-old, but with so many of us working from home now, it’s hard not to get excited about all the choice available in office furniture.

There are so many different desks to choose from, from retro looking folio desks to sleek, modern desks, or desks that save on space. With most of us using laptops now it’s easy to keep your home office area neat and clean.

Don’t forget about your desk chair—you can add some spring to your home office space as simply as adding a bright, white desk chair and a bright decorative pillow. I like lime green, bright blue, or pillows with a vintage feel, and when you’re not sitting and working the pillows will add some bright colour to a home office.

Canada has such long winters that it’s really exciting to finally crack open the windows, enjoy fresh air in the house again, and tackle a spring remodel. Try some of these suggestions to kick off your own spring home remodel, and I guarantee once you’re done, you’ll really enjoy walking into every room in your house.
