Planning and setting up your new baby’s nursery is a fun and exciting time and will help you get ready for your new little one. You’ll realize as you shop and plan what items are must haves and what items will turn the nursery into a cozy and inviting place for you and your baby to enjoy quality time in together. When I had my boys I wanted their rooms to be fun and colourful, but also somewhere cozy and comfortable for all the hours I knew my husband and I would be spending in there.

There’s a lot of must have items in setting up a nursery for your new bundle of joy. Having the right necessities will definitely make your job as parents a little bit easier.

Cribs and nursery bundles

Storkcraft Tuscany 4-in-1When it comes to baby necessities a crib is at the top of the list. You can choose to purchase a crib on its own or in a nursery bundle with other furniture pieces included.

Today’s cribs seem to mostly come in a convertible style which means it can be converted into a toddler bed, a daybed and full-sized bed as your child grows.

Choosing a convertible crib means you’ll only have to purchase a new mattress instead of a whole new bed frame for the first few stages of childhood. You’ll also find most cribs come in a variety of colour choices which allows you to find the right one to fit your nursery design.

Delta Children Nursery BundleIf you’re looking to design your nursery from a blank slate, consider a nursery bundle that offers the crib as well as other furniture pieces such as a changing table, a dresser, a glider or chair and more.

These bundles will also include the pieces you need to convert the crib into a toddler and/or twin/full bed frame. A nursery bundle is a great starting point to designing a beautiful cohesive nursery.

From here you can choose a paint colour for the walls and any accessories to finish off the room.

Changing tables and armoires

You can choose from a basic changing table with open shelves underneath or one that’s designed more like a dresser with drawers and/or cupboards underneath for extra storage such as diapers, wipes, creams and onesies. Once you’re out of the diaper stage you can remove the top changing pad and still make use out of the furniture piece.

Your baby’s nursery may have a closet but surprisingly babies require a lot of “stuff” and an armoire may be a great addition to the nursery. It’s perfect for storage of clothes, books or toys and will transition through the toddler years and beyond. They are also available in a variety of colours and finishes which means you can find one to fit into the design and theme of your little one’s nursery. For more storage options try adding baskets to the open shelves for smaller baby necessities and a clean and polished look.

Chairs and rockers for baby and parents

Stork Craft Hoop Glider and OttomanA rocking or glider chair for parents in the nursery is the perfect place for feedings, soothing a cranky baby, reading a book and soaking up all the snuggles you can. The classic glider chair design has comfortable padding in a variety of colours and fabrics and typically comes with an ottoman that also glides for maximum comfort in case you’re anything like I was when my boys were small, and you fall asleep with your little one. The fabric can be easily wiped clean with a damp cloth in case of any spills or dribbles as I’m sure they’ll be plenty of those.

Another style is the rocker which is similar in design to a recliner chair that many people have in their homes. This style comes with or without a footrest and is also available with a swivel feature in some designs. The footrest, if it has one, is built right into the chair and releases with the pull of a lever which means it will take up less space in the room if that’s a concern for you.

Both styles of chairs can also be used in a family or living room if your nursery is on the smaller size or you’d like to have it in a space where friends and family can get use out of it as well.

Bedding and accessories

Bebelelo Baby crib beddingOnce you have the nursery furniture pieces figured out you can finish off the décor and design with the right crib mattress, bedding, pillows, sleep sacs and more. Just like you can purchase bed-in-a-bag for twin, double, queen and king mattresses, you can also purchase them for cribs and nurseries, they just look a little different. Some items you might find in a bedding set is a feeding pillow, crib bumper, comforter, mattress cover and more.

Sleep sacs are hugely popular for littles and come in a variety of styles and fabrics such as cotton, micro-fleece and muslin. They help your baby feel safe, warm and cozy and you don’t have to worry about them getting tangled or kicking off blankets.

As all parents know, diapers don’t always hold, and this is where a crib mattress cover is needed. It will help protect against any leaks or stains as well as dust mites and allergens. A mattress cover will ensure you’re crib mattress lasts the duration of time you need it.

Start your nursery design by choosing a colour scheme and planning the layout of your nursery. From there you can do a little research on some styles and brands that speak to you and then choose your crib or nursery bundle. Don’t forget that this process should be fun and enjoyable and soon you and your new baby will be spending a lot of quality time making memories in there.

You can save big on all your favourite brands and do some great shopping to get all the necessities needed to keep your baby happy and healthy all in the comfort of your own home at bestbuy.ca.
