Samsung makes some of the best TVs out there, and the company puts that display know-how to good use when it comes to computer monitors as well. Last September, I reviewed the desktop-freeing Samsung Space Monitor, which was an example of how design, tech and savvy combine to make a great monitor. Two new models revealed at CES 2020 take a vastly different approach while targeting a much different demographic. The new Odyssey G7 and G9 curved gaming monitors are big, and with deep curves that match the curvature of the human eye. They take up significantly more room on your desk than the Space Monitor, but expect PC gaming to be more immersive than ever.
Packed with eye-friendly technology
Before getting to their gaming cred, it’s worth having a look at the eye-friendly technology Samsung has incorporated in the G7 and G9 monitors. Both feature a deep, 1000R curve. That’s a curve that roughly matches the human eye. The two monitors have been certified by TÜV Rheinland as the industry’s first high performance 1000R curved display, and were also awarded the organization’s Eye Comfort certificate.
Actually, when you think about it, all this eye-friendly tech should actually count toward the gaming cred because it will let you play longer and more comfortably.
Odyssey G7 and G9 feature impressive specs
The Samsung Odyssey series of curved gaming monitors is packed with impressive specs, starting with a QLED Quantum Dot panel. In the G9, that’s a whopping 49-inches. The G7 is offered in 32-inch and 27-inch sizes.
Gamers will be able to take advantage of a lightning-fast 240Hz refresh rate, and compatibility with Nvidia G-Sync and Adaptive Sync. This eliminates issues like tearing and lag that affect many PC monitors, with ultra-smooth onscreen motion. Expect exceptional colour reproduction from those QLED panels, and the resolution needed to make the most out of today’s immersive video games. Resolution on the G7 series models is QHD (2560 x 1440), while the G9 sports a Dual Quad High-Definition (DQHD; 5120×1440 resolution).
Check out that futuristic design
The deep 1000R curve makes these monitors stand out while wrapping you in immersive, high resolution, high speed, ultra-realistic graphics. But the futuristic design is the first thing many people will notice, especially with the G9.
Both monitors feature a glowing “rear core” that can display 52 colours and employ five lighting effect options. Perfect for adding ambient lighting. But the G9 is clad in a glossy white shell with black trim that makes it look like something straight out of a science fiction movie. If you want a gaming setup that feels like an extension of the games themselves, the Samsung Odyssey G9 is going to be high on your list of monitors to check out.
Best Buy carries a wide selection of Samsung computer and PC gaming monitors, including curved monitors like the Samsung 32″ 4K Ultra HD 60Hz 4ms GTG Curved VA LED Gaming Monitor. Hopefully the Odyssey G7 and G9 curved gaming monitors come to Canada, because they really look like something special.
