Prepare for the Great Canadian Winter: soups and stews will get...

0
It’s officially fall, and that means we are well on our way to our great Canadian winter. There are some great ways to be well prepared for whatever fall and winter decides to throw at us.   I think that last wind storm really gave most of us a scare, and I for one don’t want to be battling hungry people at whatever store and restaurant has power.   My plan is to have some easy soups and stew ingredients on hand ready for last minute meals and in case of a power outage. Read on for some quick and easy recipes.

Shelly’s Friday Favourites: Spike Up Your Meals With Bourbon

2
I was in Chicago this past June and every restaurant had a dish that included bourbon. Personally, if you gave me a glass of the stuff, I would cringe at the intensity of the flavour. But in food, it’s a whole different story. Bourbon is the new bacon! Okay, maybe bacon is irreplaceable, but it, too, makes a deliciously savoury combination with bourbon. Let’s spike up our meals with these recipes.

Prepare for that great Canadian winter: kitchen and dining room essentials

0
Last weekend I had a moment. I was sitting on my couch, watching Sunday football, sipping a cup of tea, and flipping through a crockpot recipe book, when it dawned on me that fall has officially arrived. While I’d normally lament the end of my favourite season, we had such a hot summer here on the west coast that I’m actually looking forward to it, and to the prospect of meals that include elements that are actually served hot and not eaten on an uncomfortable chair on my balcony. However, when preparing for a new season, things don’t just “fall” into place—you need to put them there. So to prepare your kitchen and dining room for the chillier season, I’ve put together a list of a few key ingredients you’ll need (see what I did there?).

We’re crazy for apple recipes on Shelly’s Friday Favourites

0
I’ve always made apple treats in the fall when the harvest comes in, but this is the first year I was able to pick what I needed from my own apple trees and bake with them. It’s a new and fun experience, and it’s prompted me to make even more apple dishes than I normally would. Everyone who walks in my door is happy when they smell the apples baking, and if you’ve never combined apples and cinnamon or apples and nutmeg in your home, this definitely the year you’ve got to try it. The scent of what you’ve baked lingers long after the pie plate or bowl is empty.

Making your own Pumpkin Spice Latte is not hard to do. I’m not sure what the secret ingredients are in a Pumpkin Spice Latte from your favourite coffee shop, but when you make them yourself you can choose what you put into them and what you don’t.
