Dyson v7 animal extra cordless vacuum cleaner reviewI was recently sent the new Dyson V7 Animal Extra Cordfree Vacuum to test and review here on the blog. If you’re in the market for a new vacuum, the first thing you’ll notice is that there’s a lot of choice out there. Should you choose canister or upright? Robot or cordless? It can be a tough call for any potential new vacuum owner.

When I was shopping for a new vacuum I knew there were a few must-haves for my house: it had to be a Dyson, and it had to have strong suction. Thankfully when you choose Dyson you always get strong suction, so I was able to narrow down my choices to Dyson’s latest models.

If that’s the situation you’re currently in and you’re wondering what type of Dyson you should choose, I’m here to help. I’ve tested out a few Dyson vacuums in the past few months and I’ve just spent a week with the Dyson V7 Animal Extra Cordfree Vacuum. Here’s a look at what I thought after using it in my busy home.

Appearance of the Dyson V7 Animal Extra

Dyson v7 cordless vacuum cleaner reviewOne of the first things you’ll notice when you use a Dyson vacuum cleaner is that all Dyson vacuums are generally pretty lightweight. I have the Dyson Multifloor myself and I’ve used the Dyson Animal 2 upright vacuum, and both are easy to maneuver and pick up with one hand.

Although I know Dyson likes to go easy on the weight with their vacuums, I was actually surprised at how lightweight the Dyson V7 Animal Extra was. It’s only 2.4kg, and even with the battery pack built right into the vacuum, it’s not weighed down.

The Dyson V7 Animal Extra Cordless is a cord-free handheld vacuum, but it’s a stick vacuum too. You can attach the stick to the motor head to use it for your floors, take the motor head off to reach up to your rafters, or just use the base of it to clean areas you’d have a hard time cleaning with an upright vacuum.

It also comes with a few extra parts to help you with specialized cleaning: the dirt removal tool has stiff bristles to scrub at tough spots, the combination tool cleans couches, chairs, or in your car, and the extension tool can access the cracks of the couch or your car seat. There’s also a small power head that’s perfect for cleaning the floors of your car or your stairs.

Features on the Dyson V7 Animal Extra Cordless

Dyson new vacuum cleaner attachmentsJust like any Dyson new vacuum, the Dyson V7 Animal Extra Cordless has amazing Dyson technology built right in. That means that even when you’re cord-free, you never lose suction and you can tackle any task.

When you attach the stick to the Dyson V7 you can vacuum your floors with the direct-drive cleaner head. It’s got bristles that will remove your ground-in dirt, and 75% more brush bar power than the Dyson V6 cord-free.

Powered by the Dyson digital motor V7, this is a vacuum that’s focused on providing a steady supply of powerful suction. It also has two tier radical cyclones built in, and they work together to force all of the dust and dirt you pick up straight into the bin.

Speaking of the bin, just like other Dyson vacuums, the Dyson V7 has a push button system that lets you hygienically dump the dirt into a bag. That means you won’t have dust and dirt flying everywhere from trying to empty it.

Because it’s cordless you’ll have to charge the battery prior to using it. When the Lithium-ion battery is charged you’ll get up to 30 minutes of powerful suction, so you can clean your carpets, detail your car, or grab all of the cobwebs in your rafters.

You can mount the Dyson V7 right on your wall for easy storage, and the charger plugs into the docking station so you can just hang it and it charges up fast.

Is the Dyson V7 Animal Extra your new vacuum?

I used the Dyson V7 Animal Extra for three days while cleaning my home, and there’s no learning curve or getting used it it. It just works, and it works well.

What I love about the Dyson V7 Animal Extra Cord-free vacuum cleaner

suction settings dyson v7There’s quite a few things that I loved about this vacuum, starting with how versatile it is. If you’re looking for a vacuum that you can whip through your entire house with in under 20 minutes, this truly is it. The stick pops off and on with a click and the attachments are easy to switch out mid-cleaning so you can get a lot done without having to fiddle with your vacuum.

The stick itself is long enough to reach high into the rafters of your home. I have 9 and 10 foot ceilings in some places, and because the vacuum itself is so lightweight I could easily reach up with it and clean dust strings or cobwebs. Even in one area where I have a vaulted ceiling and it’s over 12 feet, I could stand on a step-stool and reach up very easily.

This is also a vacuum that’s handy for the car, and if you’ve ever wondered whether or not you should buy a cord-free vacuum to clean out your vehicle, this is the exact model you need. Just attach the smaller power head and you can deep clean your car seats and pick up dust and dirt.

They aren’t joking about the suction either: there’s two suction settings you can use, high and max, and when I used max suction with the motor head on my area rugs, it was so strong it literally pulled up the carpet.

I also absolutely loved the docking station that mounts on the wall. I have a small house without a lot of storage space, and being able to hang the vacuum on the wall and keep it charged is so handy.

Cleaning the Dyson V7 Animal Extra

There’s only one minor issue I had with the Dyson V7, and that was cleaning the cyclone. When you’re using it any dust and animal hair (if you have pets) picks up and spins in the cyclone, then drops in the bin so you can easily empty it. If you have a lot of pet hair or dirt it may stick to the cyclone and not drop into the bin.

When that happens you’ll notice that your vacuum starts pulsing off and on, even if you have the trigger pulled and the battery is fully charged, and you’ll have to clean it to get it to work properly again.

Thankfully cleaning the cyclone is really easy. You can either remove the cyclone carefully and get rid of the excess that way or gently swipe a finger along the inside of the cycle and loosen anything that’s stuck.

Overall thoughts on the Dyson V7 Animal

There’s no downside to choosing a Dyson vacuum, and the Dyson V7 Animal definitely lives up to the Dyson name. It has strong suction and lets you go places you can’t go with an upright thanks to the cord-free design, and it’s perfect for a small home or for someone looking for a new vacuum that’s a handheld but has extra features.

You can find the Dyson V7 Animal at Best Buy right now.

  1. The Dyson V7 might impress at first, but it does not hold up. After six months of very light use our battery is dead and we need a new one. It has now been weeks since we contacted Dyson to order a new battery and all we have received is a run-around – misinformation, delays, and incompetence. We really regret buying a Dyson vacuum.

  2. Not happy with the battery. It gets hot, not enough time for my type of cleaning. My house is 1300 sq feet. Just doesn’t cut it. Kind of pissed. Back to my shark.

  3. I can confirm about small house. We moved into a huge house cause of a dog and two children. And this is really annoying to vacuum a few rooms and chrge it for a several hours to keep vacuuming. I am kind of pissed off that Dyson stopped to make corded vacuums “just because”. I love their product as an owner for a few years already, but my new house needs cord and a LONG one.
