I can’t imagine waking up and going through my morning without a hot cup of coffee, and although I used to drink it strictly to get that much-needed boost of caffeine throughout the day, I’m now such a coffee fan that I’ve learned as much as I can about my favourite beverage. From the ins and outs of grinding the perfect beans at home to searching out hidden coffee bars that serve the perfect espresso, there are no lengths I won’t go to so I can enjoy coffee.
If you’re a huge coffee fan like me you’ll be happy to know there’s a day to celebrate our love of the coffee bean and everything associated with it. It’s the third annual International Coffee Day, and it’s starting on Friday, September 29th and running to Sunday, October 1st, 2017.
What does this mean for you? On International Coffee Day you have an amazing opportunity to celebrate all things coffee, from those who grow and harvest coffee to your favourite barista. It’s also a great opportunity to brush up on your coffee facts and learn a bit more about the latest coffee makers.
Fun facts about coffee
67% of Canadians age 18 – 79 drank coffee yesterday
And they aren’t all heading out to the local Tim Hortons either. As more people develop an interest in coffee, they are branching out beyond the quick caffeine grab at the local coffee shop and developing a real interest in espresso, cappuccino, and lattes.
If you’d like this to be the year you learn more about coffee you can start at the top with the Breville Barista Express Pump Espresso Machine. I’ve used this machine and it’s great for learning how to make espresso at home. With a built-in grinder you can control exactly how your beans are ground, and the 15-bar pump ensures your espresso is perfect every time.
The percent of coffee drinkers among those aged 18-24 has grown 53% since 2008
Coffee isn’t just for exhausted University students anymore. Coffee bars cater to this age demographic by having strong Wi-Fi, interesting food offerings, and a cozy atmosphere. More and more young people hang out in coffee shops socially, they do their homework there, or they use them as a spot to run their business away from home.
This generation of coffee drinkers are also embracing making their own coffee at home, and the latest small-scale espresso makers and brewers are great for making perfect coffee without taking up a lot of counter space.
For quick, convenient, and delicious coffee you can’t go wrong with the Nespresso Essenza Mini Pod espresso machine by Breville. It’s great for small spaces, is compatible with Nespresso capsules, and has a 19 bar pump so it’s just like having your own large scale espresso machine.
The Breville Café Roma doesn’t take up a lot of space either. It’s a 15-bar pump espresso maker with 3 filters for single, dual, and pod coffee. If you’re having friends over for coffee you can use the warming tray that holds up to 6 cups of espresso.
In 2015, Canadians consumed enough coffee to average out to 152.1 liters per person
That’s a lot of coffee, and if you find that you’re drinking more than the Canadian average of 3 cups per day, you might want to invest in a great drip brewer like the Breville grind control coffee maker. It has a 12-cup capacity, adjustable grinder, and calibration function so you can make your drip brew to suit your personal taste. It even has pre-brew temperature control so the water is delivered at the right temperature.
You also can’t go wrong with an OXO On 9-Cup Coffee Maker. I reviewed a few of OXO’s latest coffee makers last month and I loved how they have intelligent microprocessors to track both time and temperature. The OXO On has 40mm grinding blades for different bean grinds and makes up to 9 cups of delicious coffee you can enjoy for hours because it’s brewed straight into a double-walled carafe.
I know I’ll be celebrating International Coffee Day with a cup of coffee and an even greater appreciation for those who help bring my favourite brew home.
