Built for PlayStation 4
If you’ve been following gaming news closely, you may recall that Until Dawn was first introduced as PlayStation 3 game during Sony’s Gamescom conference back in August 2012. The game was positioned as a showcase title for Sony’s PlayStation Move peripheral, letting you experience a scary first-person horror game with precision motion controls.
After seeing the potential of PlayStation 4, the developers of the game (UK-based Supermassive Games) decided instead bring the game exclusively to Sony’s next-gen gaming console. Reintroduced at last year’s Gamescom, this new version of Until Dawn has been re-built, re-written, and re-designed specifically to harness the PlayStation 4’s power. Here’s a clip of this gorgeous (and creepy) game in action:
A star-studded cast
If some of the characters in the trailer look and sound familiar that’s because Until Dawn is stacked with an impressive cast featuring famous actors like Hayden Panettiere (Heroes), Rami Malek (Twilight), Peter Stormare (Prison Break), and Brett Dalton (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.).
The creators went even further though and hired two of America’s top indie horror auteurs, Larry Fessenden and Graham Reznick, to help pen a script that captures the right dialogue, cadence and mood needed for an immersive slasher story.
Graphics to die for
With the move to PlayStation 4, Until Dawn now uses the gorgeous Killzone: Shadow Fall game engine, allowing for extremely realistic facial animations (seen vividly in the trailer above), and intense, atmospheric environments. All character performances in the game were motion-captured using real actors to produce an authentic, cinematic story that will drawn you in. Add in next-gen lighting effects and audio techniques, and you have one impressive looking (and sounding!) game.
Your decisions determine who survives…
One of the most exciting aspects of Until Dawn is how every decision you make in the game determines your ultimate outcome. If you’ve played PlayStation-exclusive games like Heavy Rain or Beyond: Two Souls, the idea here is the same. No matter what path you take in Until Dawn, the game’s story will continue to progress—there is dying and restarting, or reloading your save file to make a different decision.
You’ll need to think carefully (and fast) as your choices will determine which of the eight friends lives through the night. It’s not just your big decisions that matter either, as Until Dawn incorporates a technique called the “Butterfly Effect”, which causes all your actions (large or small) to have a ripple effect on the story later on. Carefully consider how you treat characters—or even who you choose to save—as every move you make will have repercussions later on.
