Last year at E3 2019, I got a sneak peak at Marvel’s Avengers and was very impressed with what I saw. And, today, Square Enix gave us an in-depth look at Marvel’s Avengers in Marvel’s Avengers War Table, a 30 minute digital presentation.
Needless to say, my hype level went through the roof after watching this! We saw new details on the game’s main villain, gameplay of Thor’s “Once an Avenger” campaign hero mission, and new information on Warzones—the game’s team-based missions.

Mental Organism Designed Only For Killing
Today’s Marvel’s Avengers War Table gave us more details on the game’s central villian, MODOK. Founding member Dr. George Tarleton of Advanced Idea Mechanics aka AIM, uses the company’s technological might and the public’s fear of in-humans to convince the world that superheroes are uncontrollable and cannot be trusted.
This deranged obsession drives him to become M.O.D.O.K.—Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing. While MODOK is not a new character, the developer wanted a fresh new face for modern Avengers fans.
With AIM’s drive to manipulate public fear and Tarleton’s ability to control machines with his mind, they are the most sophisticated threat the Avengers have ever faced.
More information about Hero Missions
Today, we learned about Hero Missions and the role they play in Marvel’s Avengers. They are single-player campaign experiences, which focus on a specific playable character designed to showcase their unique abilities. And, Hero Missions allow us to experience more of each hero’s story and showcase the variety and depth of the game’s hero designs.
For example, in Thor’s “Once an Avenger” Hero Mission we can see that Thor can easily string together combos of heavy and light attacks. Or, hold for signature attacks. This makes combat versatility one of Thor’s strengths.
Brand-new information about War Zones
War Zones are missions that you can play with up to a total of four players or solo with an AI companion team made up of your unlocked and levelled up heroes. The war table on your carrier is used to launch a variety of objectives and challenges.
These missions are grounded in the story, so that means you’re always working to stop AIM and rebuild the resistance. Once you pick your mission, you can matchmake, switch heroes, choose your loadout and customize the look of your hero. Warzones range from wide-open spaces designed for exploration and team traversal to dense interiors.
Each Warzone mission has a variety of objective based challenges, boss fights and rewards. Just remember, teamwork makes the dream work!
Customize your heroes in a number of ways
If you like to customize your characters, you’ll be happy to know that you can customize your heroes in a number of ways. Depending on the gear you equip and the skills you enable, no two player’s heroes will play in the exact same way.
Each hero has dynamic combo systems, Heroic moves, an intrinsic ability, and signature move sets to unlock and customize—many inspired by classic moves and others crafted as originals just for the game. You can also customize your heroes with classic, fan-favourite, and all-new original outfits.
Post launch content and free next-gen upgrades
Square Enix has big plans for Marvel’s Avengers. Today we were reassured that the game will grow as new heroes are added, new regions and new story. The best part is, all these additions are at no cost at all.
And, earlier this week, Square Enix announced that Marvel’s Avengers will be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X at launch. Better yet, if you own the PS4 or Xbox One versions of Marvel’s Avengers, you’ll be able to upgrade at no cost to the next-gen version of the game.
Moreover, cross-gen play is supported. That means PS5 players can play with their friends on PS4. And, Xbox Series X players can play with their friends on Xbox One. Pretty cool eh? If you pre-order that Standard Edition of Marvel’s Avengers for PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, you’ll receive a limited edition Marvel’s Avengers Steelbook!
