The PlayStation VR started 2018 with a bang and never looked back since. This year we saw a plethora of fantastic games that made the PSVR’s second year on the market absolutely amazing. Now that the holiday season is here, I’ve put together a list of the 5 PSVR games that you must own.
So, if you’re looking to get that someone special on your holiday shopping list a game for their glorious PSVR, you’ve come to the right place.
Astro Bot: Rescue Mission
Developer: SIE Japan Studio
Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
Genre: Platform
Modes: Single-player
ESRB Rating: E10+ (Everyone 10+)
The story behind Astro Bot is rather simple. Your spaceship is attacked and as a result is shattered into pieces. Parts of the ship, including the Astro Bots inside, are flung to the four corners of the galaxy. You play as a giant robot who in fact controls Astro, the captain bot. Your mission is to rescue your 200+ friends over the 5 worlds and 20 levels in the game.
The game makes 100% use of the PSVR’s 360-degree view so that you can look everywhere. You can even turn and lean around corners to discover new items and areas. You use the DualShock 4 to punch, jump and hover your way across levels. Additionally, the touch pad on the DualShock 4 allows you to use the many different gadgets you come across such as a grappling hook, water gun, slingshot and ninja-stars.
In addition to its fantastic gameplay, the presentation in Astro Bot Rescue Mission is simply amazing. The visuals are some of if not the best the PSVR has to offer and the worlds around you are bright and colourful. When it comes to platforming games, this game takes the cake. Never before have I played a game that I felt so immersed in the world as I have with Astro Bot. From the superb controls to the amazing visuals to the level of replayability.

You’ve probably played Tetris before, but trust me not like this. Tetris Effect takes the incredibly addicting Tetris and transforms it into a mesmerizing experience. Music, backgrounds, sounds, special effects—everything, down to the Tetris pieces themselves, pulse, shimmer, and explode in perfect sync with how you’re playing. Thus, making any of the game’s 30 plus stages and 10 plus modes something you’ll want to play over and over again.
Tetris Effect includes an all-new gameplay mechanic called Zone. This allows you to stop time, which can get you out of sticky situations or allow you to rack up extra line clears for bonuses. Fan favourite modes such as Ultra, Sprint, and Marathon are included as well as many new original modes.
Each of the game’s 30 stages have their out music, sound effects, graphical style and background that evolves as you play. This is Tetris like you’ve never experienced before.

Firewall: Zero Hour
Developer: First Contact Entertainment
Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
Genre: First-person shooter
Modes: Single-player, multiplayer
ESRB Rating: T (Teen)
Firewall Zero Hour is primarily an online multiplayer experience. Teams of four take each other on via online matchmaking in 4v4 “Contracts”. The objective naturally is to eliminate the opposition and/or complete objectives to win the game. The environments in Firewall Zero Hour are very easy to lose yourself in.
The left stick controls forward/backward movement and strafing. These movements are smooth and fluid. On the other hand, the right stick controls turning. Instead of the same constant camera panning however, turning is done in incremental shifts. This greatly reduces the amount of nausea and motion sickness players are likely to experience.
Firewall Zero Hour is undeniably one of the elite shooter experiences on PlayStation VR. Its use of the PlayStation Aim controller along with immersive environments make for some thrilling gameplay.

There are at least a couple games on this list that I am interested in, namely Astro Bot and Tetris Effect. One day, should I get a PS4 and a PSVR perhaps I will be able to try them.
Tetris is a classic game that I have loved ever since I got my first GameBoy. Despite all the updated features over the years, that is still my favourite version of Tetris. But maybe this new one will change that.
You’ve got some great ideas here for anyone looking for PSVR games to use as gifts this Christmas.
