Smart home products can help us reduce our carbon footprint by promoting energy efficiency, integrating renewable energy sources, and reducing water waste. As individuals, we can all do our part to help reduce energy consumption, contribute to a more sustainable future, and protect the environment. One of the best places to start is in our homes. By upgrading our home’s energy efficiency, we can not only save money on our energy bills but also reduce our impact on the environment. This Earth Day, we’re excited to offer a giveaway that can help you achieve just that—with a Google Nest smart thermostat and Philips Hue LED light bulbs! Enter for a chance to win these innovative tech products and read more for tips and tricks that will help you make smarter choices.
Create a seamless and energy-efficient smart home experience
The Google Nest smart thermostat is the ultimate tool for home automation. It learns your schedule and temperature preferences and adjusts the temperature of your home accordingly. You can also control it remotely using the Nest app, so you can ensure your home is always at the perfect temperature, no matter where you are. Instead of an always-on thermostat, you have one that intelligently adjusts the temperature in your home, saving you money every day.
And when you pair the Google Nest smart thermostat with Philips Hue LED light bulbs, you can take your energy savings to the next level. These bulbs can be controlled with the Philips Hue app or with most voice assistants, allowing you to turn them on and off or change their brightness and colour conveniently from anywhere. Schedule the lights to automatically go on only when needed and off when not needed. And because they’re LED bulbs, they’re energy-efficient and long-lasting, saving you money on your electricity bills.
By using less energy, you’re reducing the amount of carbon emissions released into the atmosphere, which means you’re doing your part to combat climate change. Here are some more tips to help you make a positive impact:
- Upgrade to energy-efficient appliances
One of the easiest ways to reduce your energy consumption is by upgrading to energy-efficient appliances. Look for appliances with the ENERGY STAR label, which means they meet strict efficiency guidelines set by the Environmental Protection Agency. These appliances use less energy and can save you money on your energy bills over time. Some of the most common appliances to upgrade include refrigerators, washing machines, and dishwashers.
- Consider Refurbished Products
If you’re looking to upgrade your home’s appliances or electronics, consider purchasing refurbished products. Best Buy has a huge selection of pre-owned devices that have been inspected, repaired, and restored to their original condition. Not only are these products often more affordable than new ones, but they also help reduce electronic waste by giving products a second life.
- Use Recycling Programs
Recycling programs ensure that electronic waste is disposed of properly, reducing its impact on the environment. Best Buy’s recycling program is free for all and accepts a wide range of electronics, from cell phones to appliances.
- Take Advantage of Repair Services
Instead of throwing away broken appliances or electronics, consider repairing them. Repair services can help reduce electronic waste. Best Buy’s Geek Squad offers a variety of repair services, from fixing cracked smartphone screens to repairing washing machines.
- Consider Trade-In Programs
Trade-in programs allow you to receive credit towards new purchases in exchange for your old devices. Best Buy’s trade-in program accepts a wide range of electronics, including smartphones, tablets, and gaming consoles. Not only does this program help reduce electronic waste, but it also helps make new purchases more affordable.
I hope that these tips have inspired you. This Earth Day, take the first step towards changing your lifestyle, reducing your carbon footprint, and making your home smarter and more sustainable. smart thermostat because you can set the temp when you are away or at home
We currently don’t have any smart devices in our home (I know, that’s almost unheard of!) but I sure would like to have a NEST Thermostat, especially for when we are away and could set it to adjust our house temperature before we return from a winter vacation, rather than having the house remain at a warm comfortable temperature when no one is here for a few weeks.
Home of the future, now.
We installed a nest thermostat in our last home – we noticed that energy efficiency right away. We need one for out new home!
Smart Bulbs
Smart bulbs are light bulbs that talk to your Wifi network and you control them with an app. Much like a smart thermostat, you can program smart bulbs to turn on and off to save energy. Some smart bulb brands detect when you’re headed home and turn the lights on automatically. If you accidentally leave your lights on, you can turn them off remotely. You can also adjust the brightness of a smart bulb, saving you electricity by dimming them when a bright light isn’t required.
Smart Plugs
If you don’t have a smart home platform yet, you can start small by using smart plugs. These smart devices plug into your electrical outlets and are used to manage the energy consumption of whatever you plug into them. Their apps let you program times of use, remotely turn on and off power and even view your total energy consumption. If your teenager’s television or computer is consuming too much energy at night, program it to turn off at a specific hour, or just power it off from the comfort of your bed.
Philips smart bulbs helps save energy as you can dim the lights accordingly

The smart plugs are the easiest to set up and use… because the one I have is literally a plug and play. (pun intended)
Currently, my smart plug is my favourite. I reduce it by moving it around and plugging different lights/appliances into it so I can ensure things are turned off when not in use. If I was to win this, the thermostat would easily become my favourite as I have wanted one of these for a while.
