Sniper Elite 3 Ultimate Edition

The fate of the war and the world is in your hands

Sniper Elite 3 takes place in June 1942, during the North African conflict of the Battle of Gazala. You assume the role of Karl Fairburne, an elite sniper serving under the US’s Office of Strategic Services (OSS). Your assignment is to assassinate General Franz Vahlen and uncover his top-secret project before it’s too late.

The story is pretty much cut and dry and unfolds nicely as you progress through the game. Though, don’t expect any long winded cutscenes or cinematics. Nor, any major character developments or twists in the plot. The man focus of Sniper Elite 3 Ultimate Edition is its gameplay.

Sniper Elite 3 Ultimate Edition

A sniper’s paradise

The excellent sniping gameplay this series is known for returns, and has made its transition to the Nintendo Switch well. Sniper Elite‘s signature X-ray kill cam is back and as visceral as ever. Cinematic shots of the bullet leaving your rifle’s muzzle and penetrating your target’s full cardiovascular, muscular, and skeletal systems is entirely gruesome.

Much like other games in the series, Sniper Elite 3 Ultimate Edition is a highly tactical game that encourages you to meticulously survey the landscape with your binoculars. You can tag enemies on the field and gain tremendously useful battle intel, including what equipment they’re holding, their distance to you, and so on.

The rank of the person who you take out is especially important because the whole dynamics of a confrontation can change. Snipe a low-ranking soldier and you’re bound to draw attention, often resulting in an officer calling in reinforcements. Conversely, if you snipe the officer early, morale of the remaining soldiers drops fast and you may even see them retreat.

World War II era-appropriate weaponry

To further reinforce the game’s authenticity, Rebellion included dozens of weapons straight from the WWII time period. Naturally, sniper rifles have the widest selection, however there are plenty of secondary weapons too.

These consist of assault rifles, shotguns, submachine guns, pistols, and more. And, if you want, you can forgo sniping entirely and run in guns blazing, though you’re likely to be met with heavy resistance. Still, the option to approach situations in a variety of ways adds depth and replay.

Supplementing your arsenal is a slew of secondary weapons that really turn the heat up. You have tripwire mines, land mines, and big blocks of TNT. There are various weapon parts that are spread out all over the game. By looting dead enemies you can discover these parts and thus customize your weapons to your liking.

Sniper Elite 3 Ultimate Edition

A solid port of a cross-generational title

Originally, Sniper Elite 3 was released for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 in July 2014. Being a cross-generational release, the game’s visuals aren’t too demanding. It has translated well to the Switch and runs at 30fps for the majority of the time.

Motion controls have been added and are a nice option for those that want to use them, which allow for finer control over your aiming. Listening for the movement of your enemies is very important while you are tracking them down and I found that wearing headphones while playing allowed me to hear the finer details of their footsteps and conversations.

Overall, Sniper Elite 3 Ultimate Edition is a nice port for the Switch, just don’t expect to be wowed by its visuals or storyline.

Online and Local Co-op gameplay

Sniper Elite 3 Ultimate Edition gives you multiple ways to play. Complementing the single-player campaign is a co-op option enabling you and a buddy to connect either online or locally and play through story missions together. Coordinating your sniper shots is exhilarating, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Co-op opens up all-new tactical possibilities, such as one player stealthily invading an enemy compound to take down the officer, while your partner silently snipes soldiers outside on patrol.

A wealth of multiplayer modes is also at your disposal. These range from classic Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch, to objective-style modes like Capture the flag where teams compete to capture the enemy’s flag and return it to base. My favourites though are the competitive modes focused on sniping. This includes No Cross, a team battle where both sides are separated by an impassable central No Man’s Land.

As well, there’s Distance King that awards a win to the person who accumulates the highest total kill distance. All in all, multiplayer is a lot of fun and gives you a good reason to continue playing long after you complete the campaign.

Sniper Elite 3 Ultimate Edition is the most complete version of the game with Switch exclusive extras

Sniper Elite 3 Ultimate Edition is a great tactical shooter, and a welcomed addition to the Nintendo Switch library. I loved the authenticity in the environments and era-appropriate weapons that are included in the game. This ultimate edition of the game includes many extras such as additional weapon packs, extra multiplayer maps, an additional campaign and mini-campaign and more.

You’re definitely getting your moneys worth and the most comprehensive version of the game. If you are a fan of the tactical shooter and stealth genre, Sniper 3 Ultimate Edition is a great all-around game that you will not want to miss.

  1. Games like this coming to Switch are great! Even though they aren’t my type of game, these games bring that war game genre that many players love to the system. Thanks for the review!
