On we go with our 12 Days of Christmas feature! Yesterday was a Breville Espresso machine, and today is that trusty old favourite—a new TV. I vividly remember getting a new TV one year as a family gift to ourselves and the excitement that ensued. I’m pretty sure it was actually a CRT screen! We were happy as clams though and spent the rest of Christmas arguing over what to watch.

Modern TVs are smart

Modern TVs are pretty formidable pieces of technology, getting closer to computers all the time, certainly in terms of the interface if not actual processing power. Smart TVs come with a proper operating system which allows you to connect to the internet and browse the web, check your social media, or download apps to customize your experience.

However, not all smart TVs are created equal. Some offer little more functionality than others, so be sure to have your checklist of must-have features before you go shopping.

The Sony Bravia A8F

One of my top favourite TVs of the year is the Sony Bravia A8F OLED UHD HDR Smart TV. Aside from an impressive list of acronyms, the A8F delivers a picture quality that is hard to quantify. You really have to see it to believe it. Because it’s an OLED TV, it’s capable of producing amazingly deep, dark blacks. When the screen is fully dark, it’s like looking into a black hole. Also, the high dynamic range (HDR) means that can see a greater range of light and shadow areas than you’ve ever seen on a TV before, provided you are streaming HDR content. The overall effect is a viewing experience that is more life-like than you ever thought possible.

The Bravia A8F uses the Google Android operating system, and you can actually control it using voice commands, which is really handy. You can ask it to find videos about your favourite topic, switch to another app, or switch to another input like your Playstation or Blu-Ray player.

One of the truly unique features of the A8F is the sound. The entire screen actually acts as a a speaker, vibrating imperceptibly (i.e. without affecting picture quality) to produce a pretty remarkable audio experience.

The screen is a speaker

One of the advantages of this unique audio solution is that it allowed the designers to forego the need to integrate speakers into the TV, allowing them to create one of the most minimal TVs you’ll ever see. If you mount this TV on your wall you will see not a single protrusion, button or light anywhere around the screen. Use it to display photos or artwork, and suddenly it transcends its role as an entertainment device and becomes a piece of art, a conversation piece that is sure to impress your guests this Christmas.

Cast from anywhere

Another neat feature of the Bravia A8F is the Chromecast feature, which allows you to stream content straight from your phone or tablet to the TV. And you don’t need to have an Android device because you can also ‘cast’ from Apple devices.

  1. I have always been happy with the quality I have received from Sony electronics purchases. Sony does a great job of creating quality electronics.

  2. My grandson says he’s “Smart, smart, smart…”, he’s 5… I tell him he’s not as smart as Granda, I’m older than 5……guess I could say he’s not as smart as my new TV….
