Microsoft had a phenomenal E3 press conference this year, and one of the most exciting moments came when they announced the new Xbox One Elite Wireless Controller, releasing this October. This high quality, performance-grade controller is specifically designed to give competitive gamers ultimate freedom to customize and personalize it to their individual play style. If you’re wanting to get an edge on the competition, this new controller will help you play like a pro!

Built to last

I had a chance to pick up and hold the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller at Microsoft’s E3 booth, and the first aspect that stood out is how much sturdier (and heavier) it felt compared to the standard Xbox One Wireless Controller that comes with every console. The Elite Wireless has been built from the ground up for the rigorous demands of competitive gaming, and as such, many of the components—from the thumbstick shafts, to the D-pads, to the four rear paddles—are made with stainless steel. To help further reduce wear, Microsoft is using a low-friction material in the analog stick shaft that virtually eliminates performance degradation over time.

Built for comfort

In addition to being stronger and sturdier than traditional Xbox One controllers, the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller has been created with comfort and ergonomics in mind. The back case features a rubberized diamond grip that enables you to hold the controller with more stability, and it’s more comfortable to hold over longer play sessions. On the front case, a soft-touch finish feels relaxing and gives you non-slip control.

Unlimited customizability

Pro gamers know that the one-size-fits-all standard Xbox One controllers simply don’t cut it if you want to bring your game to the next level. That’s why the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller gives you virtually unlimited customization options to tailor it exactly to your unique play style. As an example, the controller comes with a set of 6 thumbsticks, consisting of standard (2), tall (2), and domed (2), which fit a wide range of hand sizes and can be swapped out depending on the game. It also comes with two different types of D-pads: a faceted D-pad for precise movement (great for fighting games), and a regular cross-shaped D-pad suited for swapping weapons or calling in air strikes.

What’s really a game-changer though are the four metal paddles that can be slotted into the back of the controller and configured to any button of your choosing. This allows you to tap the paddles while maintaining a firm grip on the controller at all time, and means your thumbs never have to leave the analog sticks for maximum control. All four paddles are removable too, so you can add or subtract paddles exactly to your choosing.

Now you can keep track of all your components, and transport your controller to your friend’s house (or eSports competition!) safely and securely.

Precision fire with Hair Trigger Locks

Another major advantage of the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller are the Hair Trigger Locks that reduce the trigger pull distance—letting you fire individual shots quicker, and unleash multiple shots faster. The mechanical stop built into the triggers also has a slight rebound effect, further quickening your ability to fire multiple rounds. First-person shooter fans will know that even a fraction of a second can mean instant death, so the reduced pull distances can really elevate your game. What’s great too is that each Hair Trigger Lock can be activated individually, or you can shut the feature right off if you prefer to return to full-range trigger motion.

Save profiles in the cloud, or directly on the controller

Along with your Xbox Elite Wireless Controller comes an easy-to-use companion app available on Xbox One or Windows 10 PCs. Within this app you can remap any of the 14 inputs, including the ABXY face buttons, paddles, D-pad, triggers, and thumbstick clicks. You’re able to create as many profiles as you want (saved in the cloud), and you can actually save two profiles directly on the controller for pixel precise, lag-free control. There’s a slider switch on the front of the controller that lets you alternate between the two saved profiles instantly, allowing you to remap controls on-the-fly!

From my brief time with the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller at E3, I walked away intrigued and impressed. It felt quite sturdy and comfortable to hold, and I saw a range of swappable components that I can’t wait to try out.
