Make no bones about it: Disney Infinity is going to be HUGE. Last year, I went out and bought the game day one, and I’ll
probably be right there to do it again this year. The first game was far and away Disney Interactive’s best selling console game last year, and it’s back for another spin with some new faces and a new generation of consoles.
We also have a release date too! Tuesday, September 23rd is the release date for Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes.
This year, the toy box welcomes your favorite Marvel Universe characters, including the Guardians of the Galaxy, a recently announced playset for the game just in time for the movie to release on August 1st! (If you’re interested in the film itself, I’d say stay tuned here because I’m sure Chris Vales will have you covered.)
Some of the other Marvel characters already announced, and that will be available at launch include Venom, Captain America and Deadpool. Spiderman and Nova are available in their own playset and this year’s starter kits come with Black Widow, Thor and Iron Man. Expect more as time goes by (The Incredible Hulk, for example, is on the box, and completed versions of his figure have been floating around too.)
Joining Marvel’s characters from the Disney side are the recently announced Stitch and Tinker Bell, so you can certain expect more of the Disneyverse to appear and be available in your toy box.
Before you worry about how Disney and the Marvel communities will get along, just remember how detail oriented
Disney has been in the past with these sorts of things. That’s why in places like the Avengers playsets, familiar faces like Brian Michael Bendis have been tasked with writing the plots and stories for them. Rest assured you’ll get an authentic feeling experience combined with the fun and mystique that only the Disney Universe can bring you. You will also have the ability to cross over from other playsets in the Marvel Universe. While that doesn’t necessarily mean you can take Spiderman and throw him into the Avengers Playset right away, the Guardians of the Galaxy playset will allow you to take characters like Nova or Iron Man and use them in-game in addition to the other dedicated characters like Groot and Rocket Raccoon.
The Power Discs return too. Once again, you can purchase Power Disc packs that will give you everything from new abilities to special weapons, all with the drop of a disc on your Infinity starter portal.
More details will continue to surface in the coming days. Disney still has some more surprises yet unannounced, and have started tweeting that they are working on some solutions for those who, say, have the first Disney Infinity and don’t want to purchase the 2.0 starter kit. You will have the ability to take all your Disney Infinity characters into 2.0 with a new skill tree, however, early indications appear that the 2.0 characters will not be backwards compatible. Most aspects of Disney Infinity will also remain forwards compatible with the exception of playsets (some of which were on-disc) and the Infinity twitter has also stated they’re looking into a possible fix (like digital downloads, for example.) Keep an eye out in the coming days for more news, I’d say. With only 7 weeks to go, it’s still a pretty exciting time to be a Disney Universe and/or Marvel Universe fan.
