Sony focuses on key titles

The PlayStation press conferences are always something to look forward to. Sony rarely disappoints and this year they decided to focus on a few key titles. We got extended looks as some of the hottest titles on the platform including Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us Part II, Death Stranding and Spider-Man.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at the highlights of the PlayStation E3 2018 press conference!

PlayStation

PlayStation exclusive games

The PlayStation press conference got off to a rather weird start to say the least. Attendees were gathered in a freestanding church that looked very odd. However, it all made sense as we got another look at The Last of Us Part II.

The Last of Us Part II

More footage from Naught Dog’s epic franchise was shown and immediately made sense as to why Sony had attendees gathered in a church. It was an exact replication of the scene we were shown in the game. Ellie was shown at a weeding talking with a friend who referenced her “old man”, which leads me to believe that Joel is still alive.

She meets up with her girlfriend and we quickly transition from cut-scene to what appears to be gameplay that turns quite violent. She is quietly moving around in what appears to be a forest environment with a bow and pistol. Things take a turn for the worse and a full out battle ensues.

This is definitely a game for mature audiences. Regardless, the cinematic feel that comes with Naughty Dog games is present and it is oh so good. Although The Last of Us Part II was shown first shown at E3 two years ago, we still don’t have a release for the game. I’m looking forward to seeing even more of this game and getting a release hopefully in the near future.

Ghost of Tsushima

After The Last of Us Part II was shown, Sony shifted the audience to the main building and thus we had sort of a mini intermission between games. Once everyone made their way into the main building, Sucker Punch’s highly anticipated game, Ghost of Tsushima was shown.

Ghost of Tsushima takes place in a historical open world, which takes gamers back to Feudal Japan. The trailer gave us a peak at this open world and it looks absolutely gorgeous. A samurai was seen challenging Mongol invaders in a combat style that looks similar to that of Assassin’s Creed.

Not only can you go head on full combat, you also have the choice of using the element of surprise. Unfortunately, a release date or window wasn’t given.

Trover Saves the Universe

One of the oddest games shown was from a co-creator on Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty. The game is called Trover Saves the Universe and is an exclusive game for the PlayStation 4 and PSVR. The story is written and voiced by Justin Roiland, executive producer of Ricky and Morty.

In the trailer we saw “Bathtub guy” demoing the game from his bathtub. It’s really hard to explain but take a look at the trailer below and see for yourself just how wacky and fun this game will be. We can expect to play Trover Saves the Universe in early 2019.

Death Stranding

Death Stranding is a game that has had many people talking when it was first shown. Now, for the first time, actual gameplay from this highly anticipated game was shown. We see Norman Reedus’ character with a full body suit on and hear him talking with a female.

Reedus’ character is shown traversing a variety of different environments. Interestingly enough, in ever scene he is shown carrying a big heavy chest on his back. The environments look impressive and makes me want to play this game even more than before.

Even though it feels like we have been waiting a long time for Death Stranding, I am ok with Kojima taking his time to create an absolute masterpiece.

Spider-Man

One if not the most anticipated PlayStation games this year was shown, Spider-Man. In this extended look we got to see some solid gameplay and Spidey taking on several enemies at once. The amount of detail included in this game is stunning.

Insomniac Games even included the little lines over Spider-Man’s head when he is in danger to indicate his spider sense. The web slinging in this game looks absolutely amazing. The footage closes out with Spider-Man getting the stuffing beat out of him by his enemies. Spider-Man launches September 7, 2018.

Third party world premiers

During the PlayStation press conference, we also got glimpses of third party titles coming to the PlayStation 4 and shown for the first time to the world.

Control

Control is a brand new IP from the same studio that brought us Quantum Break and Alan Wake, Remedy Entertainment. To be honest, at first I though this was a brand new Infamous game. The game features a female protagonist, Jesse Faden, and features sandbox-style gameplay with a story driven experience.

Control is expected to launch sometime in 2019.

Resident Evil 2

Resident Evil 2 is back and is built from the ground up for a deeper narrative experience. The game now uses Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine and includes a new over-the-shoulder camera, modernized controls, and gorgeous visuals.

Having been a fan of the Resident Evil franchise since it debuted on the PSX, Resident Evil 2 has always been one of my favourite in the series. I am excited to play this updated and modernized game next year when it launches January 25, 2019.

Final thoughts

Sony’s PlayStation press conference took a totally different approach than it has in previous years. Instead of trying to show as many games as possible, they focused on several key AAA titles to show off.

Spider-Man looks to be the big fall title from Sony and I have no doubt it will sell well. Melanie had a chance to play the game right after the press conference. Check out her Spider-Man hands on impressions. Death Stranding impresses me more and more every time I see it and The Last of Us Part II looks simply amazing.
