It looks like heading back to school this September is going to be looking a little different than what we’re used to, and that’s ok. To be fully prepared it’s already time to start  back-to-school shopping, and a key must-have is the perfect backpack. As a mom, I know how important it is to find the right backpack to not only fit all their school supplies, but be comfortable to wear as well.

With the possibility of a hybrid home/classroom model, the right bag will be essential for your teenager in transporting their learning must haves this upcoming year. In the past we’ve purchased backpacks that end up not working due to lack of overall space and pockets. Today I’m talking about what to consider when finding the right bag or backpack style.

The backpack

High Sierra Access 2 Laptop BACKPACKAs a mom of a teenager I know that when I’m shopping for him, I have to take style into consideration. Telling him he should buy or wear something because it’s functional or will be good for his posture or lessen back pain will not win me any mom points. Luckily backpacks come in a large variety of styles and some really cool patterned fabrics as well.

With the possibility of more items having to come back and forth from school this year I think padded straps and multiple pockets will be key. A water bottle pocket as well as a pocket with an organizer will also be must haves. I have a feeling there will also be more technology such as laptops and tablets going back and forth. Being a mom and working in my local school district, I know many parents are nervous sending their child to school with tech. Luckily there are many options of backpacks with designated laptop pockets on the market to ease those worries.

The messenger

Herschel Supply Co GibsonThe typical backpack style may not be what you’re looking for, but there are some great messenger bags as an alternative. I actually love the messenger style myself, especially to carry a laptop, but it can be straining on the neck and back if you have to carry a heavy load so a sturdy cushioned strap is a must.

The messenger style can be worn cross body or carried briefcase style with one or two carry handles and they have a nice wide opening at the top for easy access to your supplies. You’ll want to look at a few options as some have more pocket and organizer options than others if that’s important to you.

The laptop case

Targus Strata Laptop SleeveWorry not if you find a backpack or messenger bag without a laptop or tablet pocket as you can find some great pockets or cases to add to your bag. They come in a variety of sizes to perfectly fit your laptop, tablet or other media and are padded for safety. You can even find some with carry handles and extra zippered pockets if those are features you’d like.

There’s such a variety of great brands that make stylish and functional backpacks and bags. In my day, backpacks were only cool if you had them slung over one shoulder and I don’t remember there being such a variety of styles and fun patterns and fabrics. The price spectrum for backpacks also varies greatly, but if you think about it, investing in a good quality bag means they can last longer than one school year. We have a few old backpacks that come in handy for daytrips or other activities.
