Every student needs technology. No matter what you are studying, what major you declared, what eventual career you are pursuing, you will be using some form of technology. And face it, new tech is better than old tech. New smartphones have better cameras and faster processing, new computers will start up quickly, run the latest software and show your work on an unbelievable display screen. Enter this contest and you can choose what new tech to buy before going back to school since Best Buy is giving away four $500 Best Buy gift certificates as the prizes.
Do all students really need tech?
Yes! There is no other answer. Ten years ago students could scrape by without a cell phone, or laptop, but not today. Tech is not a luxury, it is as necessary to an artist as a paintbrush. As mandatory for the chemistry student as a test tube. As indispensable for the English major as a dictionary. Take a look at the 360 degree video we are showing on Best Buy’s Facebook page (for mobile use this link) to see how tech is used by students studying a variety of different subjects. Then enter either on Facebook or enter here on the blog.
If you win you can use the gift certificate prize towards a new computer, a new printer, a new tablet, a new cellphone … or you might even want to get a few new pens (Best Buy has you covered with low tech writing utensils too!).
Here are the details: how to enter
On Facebook: In a comment on the Facebook post, guess what the 3 majors are of the students featured in the 360 degree video. You must guess all 3 correctly for your entry to be valid.
On the blog: enter a comment below this post telling us about your favourite back to school tech and why it would help make your school year a success. You must include the link to the product found on bestbuy.ca for your entry to be valid.
What you may win
We will randomly choose 4 entries from all valid entries on Facebook and on the blog. Each winner will receive a $500 Best Buy Gift Certificate.
The contest will run from August 14th until September 10th.
Remember you can only enter once, either on Facebook or on the blog (not both!). Tell your school friends too: if one of your school friends wins, that should earn you at least one early morning lecture of note taking so you can sleep in!
Good Luck!

A small laptop such as this one http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/microsoft-surface-laptop-13-5-platinum-intel-core-i5-7200u-128gb-ssd-4gb-ram-win-10-s-english/10674161.aspx? would help me from stopping to have to log around a heavy laptop
My brother could definitely need a new IPad Pro so that he can use it in art classes, the new pen makes it easier to takes notes and to draw sketches.
A Laptop. Simply of any kind. Last 2 yrs of high school my sisters laptop broke. The only laptop we have. So I basically depend on public library computers. it was great but they aren’t open 24/7, no libraries are. Currently, proceeding to college, I still haven’t paid full tuition because we can’t afford. Expenses for books, I still have not told my mom. We were supposed to lose our house due to high mortgage demands. Last 2 yrs of HS I’ve handed assignments late depending on public libraries. My mark lowered. Thus, a laptop would help me hand in assignments on time, receive better grades, and decrease our expenses. This giveaway will DEFINITELY help become successful if I got the chance to win. THANK YOU for this giveaway….a chance for me to become succesful. I owe you BEST BUY!
The Apple Mac Book would make completing assignments much more fun!

I have been saving for the Apple Watch, Series 2. I want it for compatibility with all my other apple products.
I have been saving for a new phone!!
I’d like a large tablet and tablet pen. You guys said that a student without technology is like an artist without their brush, and you hit the nail on the head. I’m going into animation this year. And the drawing tablets and software are so pricy. Anyway if I won this it would be amazing and I’m sure it’d be easier to progress at school and home. (I chose this one because it’s so large and has a ton of storage )

I plan on enrolling in a PhD programme next year. Since my major fields of study are comparative linguistics and translation, I spend a lot of time learning new languages. Thus, my dream back to school tech would be Oculus Rift VR Headset which would considerably improve my learning process. The core component of successful foreign language acquisition is a total immersion into the foreign language, this is mimicking the environment every primary speaker of that language was surrounded by from his/her childhood. The Oculus Rift VR Headset offers this type of immersion.
A new laptop would be incredibly helpful as I head back to school for the first time in years!
I’d get a laptop since I’ll be able to write my papers at home and do better at school.

My favourite back to school tech would be an amazing laptop because I can rest assured it won’t crash on me or give me a variety of other issues that my previous laptops have presented which means I can spend more time doing school work instead of fixing issues. http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/hp-omen-17-3-gaming-laptop-black-intel-core-i7-7700hq-1tb-hdd-128gb-ssd-12gb-ram-windows-10/10749383.aspx?
A Mac Book Pro would be great fro my son who is going to do video editing.
Have been checking out tablets for our 5/6 year old girls. With them both being in early grades, technology is great with education/learning apps. And I found one on sale http://m.bestbuy.ca/defaultpage.aspx?lang=en#/catalog/productdetails.aspx?ajax=true&sku=10554258&lang=en-CA

My choice would be the HP Spectre x360 laptop: it’s portable and good for on the go – whether it’s in a coffee shop or lecture hall.. It’s fast enough to be able to multi-task and use many different programs at once. http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/hp-hp-elitebook-revolve-810-g3-11-6-2-in-1-netbook-intel-core-i7-5th-gen-i7-5600u-dual-core-2-core-2-60-ghz-convertible-p0c08utabl/10498187.aspx?

Being a teacher in an online environment, we are moving towards a more mobile friendly online learning environment. That said, cellphones, like the iPhone with higher memory capacity (http://m.bestbuy.ca/defaultpage.aspx?lang=en#/catalog/productdetails.aspx?ajax=true&sku=11417446&lang=en-CA) would make learning literally at students finger tips. Whether they need to complete some readings, submit an assignment, or communicate with their teacher, barring access to the internet, they would be able to do all of the above without needing to get to a computer. We have many students who spent time in the fields seeding, swathing and combining thus being kept away from school. Cell phones would allow students to keep in touch, (again barring cell service availability), keep up with their studies and communication with their teachers, allowing for a greater chance of success and completion.
This technology would, (and in fact already is) assisting a mass of students to graduate: ones who would otherwise never stand a chance.

Just something simple and complete to get through the start of High School,
This year we are investing in the Epson EcoTank printer so we never run out of ink again. http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/epson-epson-expression-ecotank-wireless-all-in-one-inkjet-printer-et-2550-expression-et-2550/10386524.aspx?
