There are few homes in Canada that do not have an appliance from KitchenAid. Perhaps it’s a blender or a hand mixer. Perhaps you recently discovered the versatility of the new KitchenAid cordless appliances. We wrote about these on the blog about a month ago. Read on to learn more about these appliances and to find out how you can enter for a chance to win one.

KitchenAid has the appliances we use every day

What is your go-to small appliance? For me it’s the coffee maker. I use it everyday. But I also bake regularly; for that, I prefer the hand mixer over my stand mixer or hand blender. Perhaps it’s just habit, but I like to use the hand mixer for most mixing tasks. My only problem with it is actually one that KitchenAid just solved: the cord sometimes gets twisted or is just in the way.

Shelly just reviewed several new KitchenAid appliance including a few KitchenAid cordless appliances. She was very impressed with the freedom in the kitchen that these allow. I can imagine making fewer messes by carrying the mixer straight to the sink and removing the beaters there, rather than over the counter.

KitchenAid appliances just become a part of a recipe

My wife does this all the time. She’ll be making one of her favourite recipes and she’ll ask me to “get the KitchenAid” out of the cupboard. “Which one?” I respond and she looks at me like I’m on another planet and should just know which appliance goes with this recipe. Whether it’s a food chopper, a blender or whatever, these appliances become a necessary component of the cooking process. Are there any recipes that “require” a very specific appliance that you can’t do without?

We sent out some great new KitchenAid appliances for reviews and now that those appliances have returned to my office, we want to give them away in this contest. Perhaps one of these will become part of your daily cooking routine.

How to enter

Entering this contest is easy and you can enter once here below this article and once below the article announcing these four appliances. In a comment, tell us what is your favourite KitchenAid appliance and is there a favourite recipe you make with that appliance.

  19. REVIEW OF THE KITCHENAID K400 Blender.
I was deciding between a Vitamix or KitchenAid. I ended up buying the KitchenAid K400 Blender in the beautiful passion red color. The passion red color of the blender almost matches my Artisan Empire Red. I like the fact that the blender to jug driver is a metal driver and not plastic (like Ninja). The assymmetric blades really get the job done, and the easy programs for ice crushing, smoothies and cold drinks are excellent.

The blender feels solid. The housing is all metal and the controls are smooth. The jug is a good size and fits nicely on the counter underneath the top cabinets of my kitchen. My discontent with the build quality is that the silver trim around the blender is a bit loose and is held together with a single screw in the back of the blender. For a 280 dollar product, from Kitchenaid, I would have expected a more quality finish. I also wish that there was a way to store the power cord and the button to blend/stop blending needs to be a bit bigger.
The standard five year warranty from the date of purchase won me over.

I use the blender for cold smoothies and making my nan’s Quesillo flan. This is my nan’s recipe for “Quesillo” (it is a Venezuelan flan). My nan used to make this on special occassions, such as Christmas or Easter.

You will need a round Aluminium or stainless steel pan (not a spring form) that is about 1.7 Qt -or- 8 inches in diameter and 4 inches high. I use a pan called a flanera pan.

    Ingredients:
    4 teaspoons of Vanilla Essence
4 tablespoons of Spiced Rum (Captain Morgan)
5 large eggs or 6 medium eggs at room temperature
1 can evaporated milk (354 ml)
1 can sweetened condensed milk (300ml)
    2 cups of granulated sugar
    1 flanera pan
1 roasting tin large enough for the flanera pan

STEP 1 – CARAMEL (Prepare the Caramel topping)
On medium heat, in a stainless steel skillet (or if you have a gas range, you can heat the sugar directly in the flanera pan); heat the sugar until it changes into a golden color (light amber) and becomes liquid. Do not stir or allow bubbles to form. You can shake the sugar to redistribute the heat. Take care to not allow the sugar to burn, and allow all granules to dissolve.

If you heat the sugar in a skillet: Very quickly coat the flanera pan with the caramel, (be careful, because the sugar caramel can burn you!) the bottom and the sides.. make sure you coat the sides all the way up, so that when the flan mixture goes in it does not touch the sides of the plan. If you have a gas stove, you may be able to make the caramel directly in the form. Let cool for 10 minutes.

    STEP 2 – PREHEAT OVEN
Preheat oven to 175 degrees Celcius and boil water. You will cook the flan in a water bath in the oven, so in addition to the flanera pan, you need another roasting tin filled with hot water.

    STEP 3 – MIX
Crack the eggs one by one, making sure there are no shell pieces and put that in the blender.
Mix the eggs in the blender, until frothy.. at medium speed in the blender, about 3-4 minutes depending on your blender. Turn off blender.
Add the condensed sweetened milk, the evaporated milk, the vanilla and the spiced rum.
Blend for another 3-4 minutes on medium

    STEP 4 – COOK
Pour the mixture in the flanera pan. You may hear the caramel crack. That is OK. You will not notice any cracks after the flan is cooked. Either cover tightly with Aluminium foil, or with the flanera pan, put the lid on and secure it
Place the pan in the water bath. Add the hot (but not boiling) water to a level that comes up halfway to the flanera pan.
Place in the oven on middle rack and cook for 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Your cooking time may vary, as every oven is different:
Check the center with a bamboo skewer… if it comes out clean and not sticky with flan, it is done… don’t worry if the top of the flanera pan is a bit odd looking or semi cooked, you are going to flip it anyway. Plus the flan will cook a bit further, when you take it out of the oven with the residual heat.
Take flanera pot out of the water bath and open the lid or take off the aluminium foil. Let rest and cool for 1 hour

    STEP 5 – REFRIGERATE
After flan has rested for one hour, it should release from the sides. If not, use a sharp knife to release it from the sides. You will know that it is ready to flip, if you rotate the pan like a steering wheel, the flan should be loose in the flan mold. Flip onto a plate, that has sides, because there will be caramel syrup. Scoop the remaining syrup from the pan onto the flan.

Decorate with cherries (not necessary) I do that only if I have company or make a caramel birds nest.
Refrigerate for 8 hours. Serve flan with excess caramel syrup and with coffee or tea.
(I only wish I could upload an image to show you all the flan)
