LEGO DC Super-Villains

As a fan of the LEGO games, I was intrigued when I first heard about LEGO DC Super-Villains at E3 back in June. I’ve always wondered what it would be like to play a game in the series where the main focus was on the “bad guys”. And, now my dreams have come true with LEGO DC Super-Villains—the first LEGO game to focus entirely on villains of the DC Universe.

Not only is it the first game in the series to focus on villains, it also allows you to create your own fully customizable super-villain character. And, to top it all of, their own signature super power. Available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, let’s take a look at LEGO DC Super-Villains a fun game for everyone to enjoy.

LEGO DC Super-Villains

Where have all the Superheroes gone?

The Justice League has disappeared and group of rookies from a parallel universe known as the Justice Syndicate are Earth’s new protectors. However, DC Super-Villains from the Legion of Doom discover something fishy is going on with the Justice Syndicate. With each player’s completely customizable Super-Villain character in command, this team of misfit lawbreakers must join forces to discover and foil the evil plans the incognito strangers have in store.

The LEGO games are well known for their humour and lightheartedness. And, LEGO DC Super-Villains doesn’t not disappoint. There are times that I was laughing so hard tears were coming from my eyes. DC fans will notice the numerous references made to the DC universe.

Pretty much all your favourite and well known villains are here including Joker, Harley Quinn, Catwoman and Poison Ivy. In fact, there are more than 160 characters that are playable in the game. What I really liked was the fact that your own customized character is accurately integrated into cutscenes and cinematics. While this may seem trivial, it adds an extra layer of immersion to the game and story.

LEGO DC Super-Villains

Classic tried and true LEGO gameplay

Aside from storylines that will make you laugh, one of the best things I love about LEGO games is that they are made for gamers of all ages to play and enjoy. For better or for worse, LEGO DC Super-Villains sticks to the tried and true formula of gameplay that makes these games so fun and easy to pickup and play. New for LEGO DC Super-Villains is the ability to have special powers for each villain, which in the long run spices up gameplay here and there.

Though, long time LEGO fans, after a few hours of play, may find gameplay to be a tad repetitive. I often found myself performing the same sets of move on enemies over and over again. I found that playing the game in one to two hour sessions seemed to alleviate any sense repetitiveness.

Just like other recent LEGO games, LEGO DC Super-Villains offers a semi-open world that acts as a hub between missions. Compared to other LEGO games such as LEGO The Incredibles, which offered a wealth of activities and collectibles, LEGO DC Super-Villains falls short. There really isn’t much to see or do. Essentially, it just acts as an unnecessary bridge between missions and feels like a giant waste of time. To be honest, the game would have been better served using the old style of going from mission to mission.

LEGO DC Super-Villains

Excellent voice acting and wonderful LEGO visuals

The world of LEGO DC Super-Villains looks wonderful and a big part of the game is the superb voice acting. Traveller’s Tales really brought in the nostalgia when developing this game and its shown by the return of a lot of familiar voices. Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy return and do a fantastic job voicing their infamous Joker and Batman roles.

It was nice to hear a lot of familiar voice return to play the characters that they embody so well. As with many other games in the LEGO series, there are times where the camera either is zoomed out or just makes it plain hard to see. Ultimately it really never deters from the game, but it is something that I hope they fix in future games.

LEGO DC Super-Villains

LEGO DC Super-Villains is a game that LEGO fans will love

If you are a fan of the DC universe and LEGO games, you will love LEGO DC Super-Villains. It sticks to the tried and true gameplay formula with little deviation. The humour you have come to expect from LEGO games is present and will have you rolling on the floor. I really had fun with the amount of customization you can apply to your character. I spent a lot of time modifying my character and making them my own.

Additionally, I felt that the levels were well designed and found that they were easy to navigate through. As with other LEGO games, LEGO DC Super-Villains is a game that offers up some plain old-fashioned fun that pretty much everyone will enjoy. Some of my most memorable moments from the game are playing with my son and seeing the smile on his face when we defeated enemies.

If you are looking to pickup a game for a younger gamer on your holiday list, LEGO DC Super-Villains should be near the top of your list.

+ Great story that will have you laughing and grinning from ear to ear
+ Easy to pick up and play
+ Superb voice acting
+ Fun for gamers of all ages

– Gameplay remains the same as other games in the series with no innovation
– In-game camera can be frustrating at times

  1. I’ve tried a few times with the Star Wars games to get into the LEGO franchise, but it’s never really grabbed my attention. I’d like to say this is a game I’m interested in because I am intrigued by the idea of playing as the villains, but realistically I don’t think I will ever pick this up.

Great review though. I hope others who enjoy the LEGO games consider this one.
