Everybody’s Golf VR review on PlayStation VR

Back in 2017, the Hot Shots Golf series went through a name change to Everybody’s Golf. The series made its PlayStation 4 debut in the summer of 2017 and was one of the best games in the series. Now, just a few years later, Sony has brought its popular golf series to the PlayStation VR in Everybody’s Golf VR.

Everybody’s Golf has always differentiated itself from the other simulation style golf titles with its own quirky, lighthearted style that focused on the fun side of the sport rather than its intricacies. Let’s take a look at how well the series translates to VR.

Everybody’s Golf VR maintains the principle components that makes the series great

I consider Everybody’s Golf VR to be a spin-off of Everybody’s Golf on the PlayStation 4 rather than a fully-fledged sequel. With that being said, it is surprisingly more substantial than the bite-sized VR experience I was expecting.

One of the first changes I noticed with Everybody’s Golf VR is the replacement of the standard third-person view with an ultra realistic first-person view. Coupled along with the PlayStation Move controllers, I immediately felt like I was out on the green and ready to show my opponents my “A” Game.

Additionally, Everybody’s Golf VR features a wide assortment of accessibility and customization options. Quite possibly my favourite option in the game to enable is something called vacuum holes. When close enough to the hole, the game will suck your golf ball in—making it easier for casual or novice gamer to enjoy the game.

I have to commend Clap Hanz on Everybody’s Golf VR‘s gameplay. Despite the seemingly many changes, at its heart, the principle of the game remains the same. Regardless if you are new to the series or a long-time veteran, Everybody’s Golf VR has something for everybody.

Three courses to play on along with an overzealous caddie to cheer you on

Everybody’s Golf VR features three courses to play: Forest, Dinosaur, and Seaside. All of these courses have the traditional 18-holds to play through. And, if you want to brush up on your golfing skills there is a practice course.

Riko, your faithful caddie, is always by your side with words of encouragement and tips to help you get the best out of your game. Each of the three courses gives you a different experience as you play them. For example, the Seaside course has an abundance of water hazards and traps to avoid. In addition, it features variable wind conditions and terrain elevation variations when compared to Dinosaur and Forest courses.

Deep yet easy to grasp gameplay

Everybody’s Golf VR supports both the PlayStation DualShock 4 controller and the PlayStation Move controllers. Having played this game with the Move controllers, I highly recommend them for the best experience.

The power of your swing is all dependent on how fast and hard you swing the Move controller. In my play experience, I had a few follies here and there. Several times the strength of my swing was not measured correctly. Additionally, I experienced a handful of times where no matter what I did, I could not get my club close enough to the ground to hit the ball.

Thanks to the power of the PlayStation VR, Everybody’s Golf VR gives you an unparalleled sense of realism—unlike any of the previous games in the series. The colours throughout the game pop and the courses look fantastic. The course architecture is simply stunning and brings out the game’s charm. From birds flying overhead, to the calming sounds of waves—there is beauty behind ever corner.

Everybody’s Golf VR is a deceptively deep and rich golf game that everyone can enjoy

Everybody’s Golf VR‘s gameplay is deep yet easy to grasp, making it fun for both the casual and pro golfer. Moreover, the game offers an incredible feeling like you are right on the golf course. There are additional courses and clubs to unlock, which helps enhance the replayability of the game.

I was a bit disappointed with the lack of an online mode. It would have been nice to be able to compete in online tournaments or play with friends. In the end, if you are PlayStation VR owner who is looking for a game that is simply fun to play, Everybody’s Golf VR is sure to bring you hours of fun.
