Real-life Star Wars battle comes to Toronto
2015 is unquestionably the year of Star Wars. From the upcoming movie, to the awesome new Star Wars toys, to this week’s much-anticipated release of Star Wars Battlefront, this year has been a dream come true for Star Wars fans.
The raw excitement was out in full “force” last month as thousands of spirited Star Wars fans packed Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto to partake in an epic Lightsaber Battle between the light and dark sides of the force. This gathering was hosted by Newmindspace, a homegrown non-profit organization that has put on several large all-ages events including massive bubble battles, pillow fights, and giant games of capture the flag on city streets.
To surprise and delight the huge crowd gathered at the Lightsaber Battle, Best Buy Canada coordinated a “teched out” Jedi vs. Sith showdown that was truly epic to watch. Put on to celebrate the new film and Star Wars Battlefront, this incredible battle of good vs. evil drew thousands of onlookers to witness these talented martial art masters in action.

As you can see, the action sequence was simply impressive! The Best Buy warriors kicked, flipped and exhilarated the crowd—all while blasting music played—leaving many fans anticipating the release of both the video game and the upcoming theatrical film even more.
Behind the scenes
What’s really cool too, is all this excitement was staged using products available now at Best Buy stores and BestBuy.ca. For instance, the Jedi warrior wearing an LED suit had a GoPro HERO4 HD Sports Camera fastened on his chest to record professional video from his unique perspective. You can see just how lightweight and vertastile this camera is when recording high speed movement—even as Jedi warrior was performing backflips, roundhouse kicks and breakdancing, the camera remained firmly attached and didn’t miss a second of the action.
The thumping music you hear came from the pint-sized, but powerful Ultimate Ears ROLL Bluetooth Wireless Speakers. With their unique 360-degree design, these speakers pump out sound in in every direction; ideal for outdoor events such as this. The speakers are also waterproof and exceptionally durable, with they can withstand even your wildest adventures.
Last, but certainly no least are the mega cool Hasbro Star Wars lightsabers wielded by each warrior. The Jedi held the Hasbro Star Wars Luke Skywalker Force FX Lightsaber, which is modelled after the blue lightsaber used by Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars trilogy. The Sith was brandishing the awesome Hasbro Star Wars Kylo Ren Force FX Lightsaber, based on an ancient design featuring a main red blade, and two smaller beams out either side acting as a crossguard. Not only are these full-sized lightsabers (as you can see in the pictures and video), but they also emit light and sounds that simulate those found in the movies. How neat is that!
Star Wars Battlefront
This stunning Best Buy martial arts display was of course put on to celebrate Star Wars Battlefront, the action first- and third-person shooter video game based on the Star Wars franchise. From the acclaimed developers at EA DICE, Star Wars Battlefront will transport into large-scale, photorealistic Star Wars battle featuring exhilarating 20 vs. 20 player combat—all powered by the cutting-edge Frostbite 3 Engine.
In the game you’ll experience characters, vehicles, and weapons straight from the movies, and visit iconic Star Wars locations such as Luke Skywalkers’ home planet, Tatooine, the forest moon and home of the Ewoks, Endor, the ice planet, Hoth and lastly, a pivotal planet from the New Sith Wars, Sullust.
