Many people find home audio a shopping challenge and may avoid even learning about great receivers like the amazing, versatile options from Pioneer. Yes, the easiest home theatre audio solution is to get nothing and let the TV do the audio heavy lifting. However, televisions will never produce the kind of immersive audio you get from a great stereo system. And that stereo system begins with a premium receiver like the Pioneer VSX-935 8K 7.2 channel receiver we are giving away in this contest.
How to get the best home theatre audio
Sometimes I watch TV and get the audio from the television speakers. This is fine for me when I’m watching the news or a weather report. If I’m watching something meaningful, I’ll use a sound bar connected via an HDMI cable. I use that same sound bar to stream Spotify sometimes if I want background music in the living room.
However, when I’m watching something meaningful to me I send the audio to my receiver so I get an audio experience comparable to the great visuals and great storytelling I’m enjoying. It’s all part of the same package for me. Sometimes, I’ll rewatch something that I streamed on my phone because I know it will be so much better on the big screen with the big sound I can only get from my stereo. For example, the opening music of Star Trek: Discovery has amazing depth and gives me chills—when I listen on my stereo! Even Tig Notaro’s acerbic tone as my favourite character in this series, Jett Reno, is more biting through a proper home theatre system.
How do I know what to look for in a home theatre receiver
Like many of the Canadians reading this article, I am not a home theatre receiver expert. I’m not. That’s why I hire people who know more than I do for many of the projects I assign for the Best Buy blog. The prize we are giving away is a great example: I sent it to Jason Gorber, who knows a lot more about audio than I do. So if you want to learn more about this prize, you should read his informative review.
Similarly, the many comprehensive buying guides you find on the blog were not written by me. In fact, they are not the work of just one person. I assign the project to a knowledgable writer on the team, then the draft goes to other experts for that product category to be revised and molded to, hopefully, be maximally useful as a tool that helps shoppers find the right products for their home. Check out the Receiver Buying Guide on the blog and you will have a better idea of what a receiver can do for your home audio needs.
How to enter
Entering this contest is easy and you can enter in three (3) different ways.
- In a comment below, tell us what you usually use for home theatre audio and how this receiver might improve your home listening experience.
- In a comment below the Receiver Buying Guide, tell us one aspect about receivers that you learned from that article.
- For up to two (2) additional entries, create a public post on a social media channel (one entry per channel!) sharing with your friends and followers one reason why you want to win this Pioneer receiver; include the hashtag #BestBuyPioneerContest, so we can find your post, and include one of the pictures showing on this article. Then return here and tell us in a comment below on which channel you posted it and the name of your channel (since many people use pseudonyms) so that we can check and verify your entry. You can use any social media channel (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, etc.), but the post must be public so we can verify it is there.
What can you win
At the end of this contest, we will randomly select one (1) winner from all eligible entries to receive the Pioneer VSX-935 8K 7.2 channel receiver sample that was tested for the blog review article.
This contest runs from July 7th to July 21st.
Remember, you can enter in three different ways as discussed above. You should also discuss the information in this contest with your family and friends so they too can enter this contest for a chance to win a premium Pioneer receiver.

Currently do not use a soundbar or receiver. But could really use both. Would really like to use the receiver late with headphones so I do not disturb neighbours with watching TV/Movies/gaming late at night. Insomnia sufferer.
The Pioneer receiver tested is amazing and its connectivity is something that I would definitely take into consideration as I would upgrade my television at Best Buy.
I currently usually use my soundbar for movies and gaming but this would be the ultimate upgrade
I currently just use my tv speakers. This would definitely help take it to the next level.
I use a Marantz from the late 90’s. It can’t handle the power of the speakers and isn’t compatible with most electronics nowadays. I want to connect everything in my home theater.
This would be better than the speakers on my tv
I’m currently rocking a Yamaha receiver from 20 years ago. Since it lacks any sort of HDMI or AUX input, that alone would improve my entire setup. The ability to connect a variety of things to it vs only having one optical input would be pretty great.
I’d love to add surround sound to my TV
I would use this receiver to watch movies like Lord of the Rings. I lost some of my ability to hear certain higher pitched sounds. I also do not hear film and tv conversation.. This might improve my appreciation of the movies more.
The advent of HDMI has made connecting all devices easy and efficient; a single cable can now transfer digital high definition (or better) video and multi-channel audio, and the receiver decodes it all and sends it where it needs to go. A decade ago you would need a separate audio and video cables to connect a single device.
I usually use htib, this setup would take sound to a new level
I use the speakers on my tv, this would be great improvement.
I currently use a sound bar and I think this receiver would up the sound quality.
I use the sound out of my television so this would be a huge upgrade.
I usually use the audio that comes with the TV which makes for a horrible viewing experience. With this receiver I would finally be able to get balanced sound while watching shows or movies.

I’m using the TV speakers so a proper home theatre receiver and good speakers would be a huge improvement.
Just using tv speakers and need a setup for better sound.
I usually listen to my older JVC Receiver 5.1 setup to watch TV or movies, et c.
I use the TV speakers. The volume seems the same once we get up to level 30 and up … so this would really help so we can actually hear the tv when our fans are going or AC is going!
I use a Samsung sound bar, but this would take it to the next level.
I just use my TV. Never really thought about purchasing a receiver. I am now though, there are definitely times it would be nice to have better sound.

i use a soundbar, having a receiver would help me integrate more speakers
Use my current unit for Dolby Atmos in movies and in games, and just watching general TV, its always on! Also take advantage of using the pass thru features so I can hook up my Xbox series X and PS5 and still have all of the features these systems have.
We listen to music, watch tv and movies with our receiver, a new one would probably produce much better sound.
I use my old receiver to replace the sound coming from the T.V. speakers which are not great.
I just use the tv speakers, so this receiver would really change our experience watching movies and TV!
