So far, 2018 has been a glorious year in gaming. There has been a nonstop flow of quality games that have absolutely knocked our socks off. With games such as Monster Hunter World, Sonic Mania Plus, Forza Horizon 4, Dead Cells, and Dragon Ball FighterZ—gamers have been in paradise.

With a tons of great exclusives, and some of the hottest third-party games yet to come, 2018 is certainly shaping up to be one of if not the most memorable years in gaming in quite a long time. With that being said, I’ve compiled a list of my top 5 games of 2018 so far up to the end of September 30, 2018.

games1. God of War

Platform: PlayStation 4
Genre: Action-adventure
Release date: April 20, 2018

The one word that kept on popping into my head while playing Sony Santa Monica’s God of War was epic. In this game, Kratos is older, wiser, and perhaps for the first time ever, feels strikingly vulnerable. That’s because in this chapter he’s not just a god, he’s also learning how to be a father.

Sony Santa Monica took a few years to rethink and rebuild a bigger, better God of War. The effort has paid off and in my opinion is Sony’s best offering so far this generation. God of War goes well beyond being merely entertainment and enters the elite realm of artistry held by masterpieces like The Last of Us and Shadow of the Colossus, coincidentally games also made by Sony.

games2. Spider-Man

Platform: PlayStation 4
Genre: Action-adventure
Release date: September 7, 2018

Ever since Spider-Man was announced in 2016 and shown at E3 2017, it has been near the top of my most wanted list. Now it is one of my top 5 games of 2018. This game takes Peter Parker and Spider-Man in and new direction with an older and more mature Peter Parker. The new game features everything you love about Spider-Man such as web-slinging, wall-crawling and acrobatic abilities.

Very rarely does a game come along with as much polish on all fronts as this game does. If you have any remote interest in Spider-Man at all, you will love this game. And, even if you don’t, you will want to try this game. The exquisite gameplay will have you hooked.

In addition to the great story, fantastic gameplay, and stellar presentation—Spider-Man is getting post launch content in the form of 3 DLC packs. Each DLC pack will include new enemies and three additional suits to unlock. With so much to see and do in Spider-Man, it will keep your busy for hours and weeks on end trying to unlock and collect everything.

games3. Detroit: Become Human

Platforms: PlayStation 4
Genre: Adventure
Release date: May 25, 2018

Detroit: Become Human is Quantic Dream’s best effort yet, it’s simply exquisite. Everything comes together in Detroit: Become Human flawlessly. The game has exceptional writing, pristine visuals, a phenomenal soundtrack, and superb acting.

There are hundreds of possible outcomes and most players I can see replaying the game several times over discovering more paths. From beginning to end I was on the edge of my seat. Going into it, I wasn’t sure if it would be a good game, or a great game.

Not only is it one of the best games this year, it’s one of the best games this generation. Even though I have played through this game several times, I keep finding myself returning to discover something new.

games4. Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One
Genre: Action-adventure
Release date: September 14, 2018

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the sequel to 2015’s excellent Rise of the Tomb Raider. The game’s tagline says that it will be a “climatic finale” for Lara’s origin story. Development shifted from to Eidos Montreal and they took the bull by the horns and rode with it.

They did a fantastic job on keeping with the previous two games, and in my opinion surpassing them. When all is said an done, Shadow of the Tomb Raider offers a captivating story that completes the trilogy and Lara’s transformation. While gameplay for the most part is the same or similar to the previous two titles, the refinements made by Eidos Montreal help make it the best in the series.

games5. Far Cry 5

Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One
Genre: Action-adventure
Release date: March 27, 2018

Once again, Far Cry 5 hits hard. With its interesting characters, beautiful new setting, huge number of missions, and range of air, land and sea vehicles, this game is just pure fun. Far Cry 5 doesn’t deviate from its basic formula, but what is different this time around is just how rich and authentic the story is.

Hope County is home to a doomsday cult, led by the ruthless yet surprisingly relatable Father figure. Joseph Seed also stands out as the best villain the series has ever seen. Graphically, Far Cry 5 is the most beautiful entry yet. While it might not be the best visuals of this generation, it’s certainly very impressive to look at. In a huge technical feat as well, once in the game load times are virtually non-existent.

Far Cry 5 has constantly been one of the top selling games each month since release and as of the most current sales numbers August 2018, it is the best selling game of the year so far and the fifth best selling game in the last 12 months.

  1. I certainly hope by the end of the year that Smash Ultimate makes the list. I don’t expect Mega Man 11 make any top of the year lists, but I’m still excited to try it.
Some of your games really make me wish I had a PS4, but there is no way I would ever have time to play them all.

    • Hi Ian. You’ll have to wait until the end of the year to see what games make my list. Maybe I could a top 10 games of 2018? What do you think? I’ve been playing Mega Man 11 and if you like the games on the NES then I am sure you will enjoy it. I’ll be reviewing it soon. I am curious to know, what your top 5 games of 2018 are so far?
